The First In-Person Meeting in Over a Year!

The Orlando Modern Quilt Guild had it's first in-person meeting this week since March 2020, and a very happy group of members it was ! 

Since the pandemic began,  the Orlando Modern Quilt Guild has been keeping up with programming and connection to members by hosting monthly Zoom Meetings and Sew Days, as well as online guest lectures and workshops . While it is still a terrific substitution, ( a few more months at least!)  there is nothing like meeting in person and sharing friendship and projects with your fellow quilters. 

The location was Maitland Community Park, in Maitland Fl, very close to the Sewing Studio, where the guild normally meets on the first Wednesday of each month. 

The Orlando MQG has welcomed several new members during the recent membership drive, and also members that joined last year, just as the pandemic began... a few people who have been members for over a year had never attended an in-person meeting ... our kudos to you for hanging in there with us! 

Even though masks were still "de riguer" nobody seemed to mind, as they were having too much fun in the meet and greet getting to know fellow new members and seeing old friends again. 

It was a casual meeting,  although a few announcements were made. We heard news about the upcoming annual retreat,  November 4-8 in Daytona Beach, and an overview of the great community outreach projects that are currently happening (you can see details on the projects in the sidebar here on the blog.)  We also saw a parade of results from the Curves and Transparencies workshop by Caroline Oneto.

The highlight of the meeting was the Show & Tell. So many beautiful projects were shown, you could hear the gasps from members so excited to view completed projects in person from fellow members. While the Guild is going back to Zoom for general meetings for the new few months, stay tuned for details as the situation improves for us to meet again at the Sewing Studio. If you were at the meeting,  thanks to all of you who journeyed to the park; it was great seeing you !

March 3, 2021 Meeting

The March Orlando MQG general meeting was held on Wednesday, March 3 with an overview of QuiltCon presented by Debra Jalbert, Vice President, and a great discussion on quilt favorites of the Guild members.  Debra, who is not only a QuiltCon winner, but also a QuiltCon instructor, answered questions about the process of virtual teaching this year.  After the general discussion, small breakout rooms were held for socializing.

2. Sign-ups for the Carolina Oneto class are due April 1; Marge will send out materials list this week.

The Orlando MQG annual retreat has been booked for November 4 to 8, 2021 at Ocean Walk – keep your eyes open for more information to come later!

We are so excited to announce that Sara Trail, from the Social Justice Sewing Academy, will be a guest speaker for the Orlando Modern Quilt Guild on Aug 13 at 7 pm, via Zoom.

If you are not familiar with SJSA, please visit their website to see the incredible work they are doing in providing "hands-on workshops in schools, prisons and community centers across the country. SJSA empowers youth to use textile art as a vehicle for personal transformation and community cohesion and become agents of social change." Their exhibit at Quiltcon has been one of the most visually exciting and thought-provoking areas of the quilt show.

January General Meeting

Welcome and Happy New Year to all our members and guests.

Ice breaker - Beth

Beth divides the audience in 3 groups: Members who were in the Guild before the Pulse tragedy, Members who joined at the time of the Quilts for Pulse drive, Members who joined in the last 2 years.  Each groups got to answer to 5 questions.

President - Ede

Ede gives an update on Sew Days:

• Dr Philips Sew Day - the library has lots of groups requesting the room and the schedule is established 6 month at a time, which means that we haven't been able to secure the room for the first semester of 2020.  We are looking at other potential locations in the area, and at week days;
• Maitland Sew Day - all the dates for the first semester of 2020 are on the blog;
• Casselbery Sew Day - the blog will be updated with 2020 dates once they are confirmed.

The Lake Mary Museum Annual Quilting & Fabric Art Exhibit  has opened on January 4th and will run until February 1st.  There are 9 quilts from our guild members' exhibited.

December BOM is won by Diana.

Wendy is presenting January Block of the Month.  The instructions are on the blog.  Wendy shows how the blocks could make a secondary pattern.

New Year - New Challenge

If you’ve lost your sojo, been busy with other things and want to find your way back to your sewing machine, we have a challenge for you:  choose one project from a book or a pattern you've got very excited about but never done or finished, and start working on it.  Project from library books are accepted too.

Rules: 

• Anything goes;
• Bring the project, finished or not, to our March meeting for Show'n'Tell;
• A prize will be drawn at the meeting.

Sewing room virtual tours

Yanick invites members to create a short video (1 to 2 minutes, no sound) of their sewing space.  Starting in February, we will show some videos and the owners will be invited to comment on their space.  There's a sign in sheet circulating.  If you haven't sign up at the meeting, you can still email us your video to the guild email.  And please, do not clean up your Sewing Room for the occasion!

Last month Income was generated by the sale of tickets from Quilty basket, expenses for charity project.

Membership renewal
Membership renewal will be starting in February, and we hope that most members will have renewed by the end of March which is when we have to send our dues to the MQG.  The renewal form will be send very shortly.

The pictorial directory will be updated, if you want to have your picture refreshed, bring your best smile to the meeting.  However, if you like your current picture, you can keep it.

Beth - Sunshine

Beth reminds members that we have a Sunshine person.  Her role is to send out a friendly card to members who are going through special life event.  We want to create a tight knit community, so if you know someone in the Guild in need of some sunshine,  please let us know.

Community outreach - Kelly

Quiltcon
Kathy and Mary present the QuiltCon Charity Quilt which will be sent to Austin for QuiltCon in February.
The theme this year was TEXT and the color palette shades of gray.
Inspired by our Community Outreach drive for this year, our quilt has been designed around the word HOME, using log cabin blocks, and HOME written in different languages.
Once the quilt is back, it will be donated to the Zebra Coalition.

Thanks to Kathy for leading the committee, Jeff and Carla for the research and all the others who participated in creating this quilt.

Call for Blocks
Thank you for the blocks, and keep them coming.  A couple of quilts have been completed during the Retreat in November.

Also we are looking into what we can do to help for Australia.
Update - the Wollongong MQG is collecting Tree blocks (see details HERE).  Connie, Julie and Connie will be collecting blocks at our February meeting.  There is also going to be a collection point at QuiltCon.

Zebra Coalition
It is the last push for the year Community Outreach drive.  We will have a Show'n'Tell for the remaining of the Quilts in February.

Education

Ede announces that Timna Tarr is coming to teach on April 25th (location to be determined).  You can check her website to see her work.  

Ede presents the different class options: Making Map with Fabric, Stitched Mosaic (technique based class), Strung Along (color theory and placement), O Happy Day.

Signs up will start in February.  As usual, your check will hold your spot.

Quilty Basket 

Betty won last month and brings the basket back with some books, rulers, water spray bottle, sewing machine needles, scissors, compression gloves…. And the winner is Debbie.

Side note: Betty informs the assistance that Missouri Star will be at The Villages in March.

Sustainability challenge
Following December's Sustainability challenge, Yanick draws a prize amongst all the participants.  Karol is the winner.

Thank you to Tonny for welcoming us in her home and sharing her knowledge and techniques.  Also, thank you to Paula for filming, producing this video.  The video can be watch on our brand new YouTube channel.

We would love to have more demos from our members.  Members are encouraged to contact the Programming team if they are interested in sharing skills, techniques.

Interest Groups - Wrap up 

In February, we will wrap up our Interest Groups' activities with a special Show'n'Tell.  Finished or not, we would love to see what you've been working on.

Our February meeting will also be the occasion for a Members' Speed Trunk Show': bring a project to show if you want to participate.

Update on the Bags for youth getting out of the Foster system
Jan reports that 110 large bags and 125 quarter bags for younger kids have been donated.  She will keep sewing bags and invites you to do so too.  You can also donate fabric.  There is a need for 200 big bags per year and 125 small bags twice a year.  You can find the instructions for the bags HERE, under the Section "Helping Hands".

Happy New Year!!!!

It's time to ring in the new year...time for new beginnings....time to set goals and resolutions.

What quilting goals  have you set?

How about including the Orlando Modern Quilt Guild in those goals....we have a great 2011 planned!

Find out more at Wednesday's (January 5) guild meeting from 10am-12pm at The Sewing Studio in Maitland.  Robert Kaufman is generously donating solid charm packs for our first challenge of the year, details of which will be revealed at the meeting.  Also up for discussion is January's quilt show, National Sew Day (March 15), OMQG's Sew-Cial to commemorate our one year anniversary, survey results, and upcoming officer elections.  Bring any new quilting books or tools you received for Christmas to show and tell.  If Santa didn't bring you any, bring in your favorite book or tool ;-)  As always, we love to see projects for Show and Tell.  Remember, it doesn't have to be completed.  It's great to see the progression of projects as well.  

Below is a listing and description of our officer positions.  As March is the start of our new year, we will "elect" new officers at our February meeting.  If more than one person is interested in a position, we will have a majority rule vote; otherwise, it will be a non-voting election.   Email if you are interested in taking on an officer position or if you have any questions regarding the positions.

President

• Arrange for, schedule and facilitate OMQG meetings and board meetings. 

• Assist/coordinate in planning monthly OMQG meetings. 

• Prepare agenda for monthly OMQG meetings. 

• Maintain Blog and Flickr accounts.

• Attend monthly guild meeting. 

• Attend guild board meetings. 

Actively participates in leadership and decisions about topics such as annual planning,

programs, events, budgeting and membership.

Primary function is to see to the smooth running of the entire guild. Must feel comfortable speaking in front of a large group of people. Organization is necessary and follow through is a must.

Before OMQG and board meetings, the President prepares agendas to be discussed.

Takes suggestions from all members under advisement. Works with individuals as needed.

Vice President

• Perform the duties of the president if needed, including running the monthly meeting. 

• Arrange and schedule workshops and other guild activities. 

• Assist in maintaining Blog and Flickr accounts. • Attend monthly guild meeting.

• Attend guild board meetings.

Secretary

• Attend monthly guild meeting. 

• Attend guild board meetings. 

Actively participates in leadership and decisions about topics such as annual planning,

programs, events, budgeting and membership.

Treasurer

• Maintain OMQG bank account including preparing reports for monthly meetings. 

• Pay any bills that may incur including reimbursements to members. 

• Handle membership dues collection throughout the year. 

• Maintain membership spreadsheet/database: including collecting new membership forms, entering data and keeping

records updated. 

• Helping create and maintain OMQG’s online documents and calendar. 

• Assist in maintaining Blog and Flickr accounts. 

• Attend monthly guild meeting. 

• Attend guild board meetings. 

Actively participates in leadership and decisions about topics such as annual planning,

programs, events, budgeting and membership.

Program Coordinator (2)

• Actively recruits member or guest speakers for each OMQG meeting. Talks with the speaker about what to present and offers help, encouragement and support.

• Encourage members to be presenters.

• Communicates program information for members via blog posts and/or calendars.

• Actively works on future month’s meetings: content, lectures, social events, sewing projects, etc. 

• Coordinates giveaways, challenges or events based on the program presented. 

• Have filler material or a ten-minute tutorial on hand in case a meeting runs short or program changes. 

• Attend monthly guild meeting. 

• Supports the planning, implementation, maintenance, and documentation of OMQG’s public programs and educational initiatives.

Membership Coordinator

• Actively recruit new members with an OMQG brochure or flyer at local quilt shops, quilt shows, links on related websites, etc.

• Promote benefits of membership. 

• Coordinate member discounts at local and online quilt shops, quilting venues, etc.

Charity Chair

• Coordinate annual charity project(s) and promote philanthropy for the guild. 

• Provide encouragement and instruction to members to fulfill charity projects.
