June BOM

June has arrived!

This has been a strange year to date so I thought it would be fun to work on a block that allows for few rules, a lot of creativity, and the use bold colors.

This month, we will work to create our own unique improv block using a tutorial found on the MQG site: Improv Tutorials


  



The MQG site provides a link to Victoria Findlay Wolfe from Bumble Beans Inc’s  Waverunner Quilt Tutorial.

As you read through the instructions, pay attention to how she first auditions colors then edits the ones that don't blend well. You'll also find how she prepares her strips of fabric, sews them together, then presses them flat.

For our block(s), you'll need to:

  • Go to your scraps or pull out new fabric.
  • Use solids only. No black, white, gray, or brown. (Think bright instead of neutral.)
  • Avoid making your seams too straight. Perfection is not required.

You can choose to make your final block(s) either:


  • 12.5 by 12.5  (make 1)
  • 6.5 by 12.5    (make 2)
  • 6.5 by 6.5      (make 4)


Have fun sewing and make as many as you wish. Each set will count as an entry in the block lotto drawing. The lucky winner will get to slice, arrange, and piece a unique quilt top with everyone's various colors.

May BOM

Greetings from home!

 Hope you and your loved ones are well.

 Staying home while social distancing is the perfect time to develop your quilt-block construction skills. This month's challenge will include curves and use the MQG website patterns which are available for all current members. 

In May, we are making a modern "Strawberry Wild" block. You'll find the pattern on the MQG site HERE. 
(Remember you will need to be logged into your account to download and view the pattern.)




















Select these colors in solids or blenders for your finished block. Mix and match as long as you use 3 distinct colors: 

blues for the fruit 
greens, yellows, and teals for the top and background

A variation of colors will allow the winner to make a fun design including the Strawberry Blue Quilt also found on the MQG site. You'll need to log into your account and download the pattern if you are the lucky winner or want to make your own quilt!

Remember to respect the designer because these patterns are for members only.

April 2020 BOM

April 2020 BOM


Hope you are well and staying home. If you do have to go out, keep your distance, don't touch your face, and wash your hands.

This month, we will celebrate spring and create a block using pastels. You can use various soft colors in any order. Choose low volume or solid white fabric as your background. If using a print, make sure it reads as a solid pastel from far away. Avoid large motifs since the strips are very thin.

Strut Block



We are stepping up our skills by adding a little precision work. Take your time (since you're staying home anyway), check your quarter inch seams, and cut the final block pieces using their paper template provided.

Remember to log into the Modern Quilt Guild site to view detailed directions, print off the template, and read explanations on how to create interesting designs should you be the lucky winner of the BOM raffle.

Important Tips:

  • Practice with scrap strips so you can sew each pairing with accurate 1/4 seams (true 1/4 and not scant). Mark your machine with tape to help you stay consistent if you don't have a 1/4 foot.
  • Print out the template first to help with accuracy and alignment. Remember to print at 100% so the winner will have the correct sizes to put together. (Use clear tape for piecing the template and line them up using the symbols provided on each page. It prints with a faint grid to help with matching them up correctly. Each box should be an inch when printed.)
  • Press seams open to reduce bulk when adding the top section.
  • Use pins or clips since there may be some bias when aligning the two parts together. This step will also help keep those open seams flat.
  • Line up your blocks in the correct order and not like I did on my first attempt:

It should be short to tall going left to right. The template is your friend.
(If you do make this error, you can unpick the short strip then unpick every other seam.
Flip remaining strip sets and sew them back together.)

  • When you add the top section to the bottom strips, it may be helpful to starch and iron each half first. You can also try using a scant 1/4 here if you have trouble making it square.

Flat seams and a scant 1/4 might help match both halves.
If you're off just a bit, carefully unpick, starch then press flat.



You can use these blocks with a lot of negative space to create movement like the options below.

Since everyone will make a variety of colors it will have a fun scrappy look when all are put together.

March 2020 BOM

This month, we are starting off simple. This versatile block can create many variations depending on placement. 
You’ll find the pattern here:






We are replacing the colors from the original pattern.



Navy →→→Black
Teal →→→ White
Light Green →→→Bright Green

You can use solids and/or low volume fabrics.
Remember that the fabric must read as that color from far away.
Avoid using fabrics with too many colors in a small area.

10 Years this month!

That is 521 weeks that the Orlando Modern Quilt Guild has been offering inspiration and opportunity for Central Florida modern sewists to  create and connect together .
We are made up of people of all skill levels, ages, and quilting backgrounds.  Join us as we celebrate this milestone and look ahead to the next 10 years!

In what has become an annual tradition, March is the month for our guest lecturer, and at Wednesday's meeting , we welcome Linda Hungerford of Flourishing Palms,  from Central Florida MQG, for a lecture and demo on "Domestic Machine Quilting Using Rulers." You will not want to miss this ! Please see the biography on Linda at the end of the newsletter , and familiarize yourself with this talented and energetic instructor.

This will be a wonderful way to culminate the #10yearsinthemaking celebration of Orlando MQG , and look forward to a special gift to tie it all together !
Bring your show and tell on Wednesday; we'll proceed if we have time after the program.

  • If you've borrowed a Library Book, it is time to bring it back.  We hope you have enjoyed it.  Go to our blog and check the list of books available to borrow and/or look at Aradria's Library Spotlight in the Minutes Section.  If you can't find what you want, make a recommendation to our Wish List.

    Get your Sewjo Back Challenge is still happening  !
    If you lost your Sewjo over the holidays, we want you to rediscover your creativity. Pick up that book/pattern you were once excited to make.  Your project does not have to be completed by the end of this challenge, but actual sewing has to have taken place. Bring your progress to the April meeting. 

    10 Years in the Making BOM
    Thanks to everyone who participated in our BOM lottery celebrating our guild's 10th year! Debra J. organized this year's block each month with the idea of making a sampler quilt at the end of the year. See the blog link here  http://theorlandomodernquiltguild.blogspot.com/p/bomstutorials.html 
    Each block had an element of gray or white and you could make blocks for the lottery and one for yourself. Bring your blocks or quilt to share in April .

    ON-GOING PROJECTS
    Call for Blocks

    This year we will be continuing the Road to Tennessee blocks (BLOG LINK). Finished blocks or quilt tops can be brought to monthly guild meetings. Julie, Connie, and Laurie will be set up in the back of the room. You can also help by picking up one of the quilt bundles (includes top, backing, batting and binding) to complete the quilting and binding. The more finished quilts we have on hand the more quickly we can respond to each new call.

    Seniors First Placemats

    In case you haven’t already found out, making placemats is a quick and easy way to clear out your stash of orphan blocks and fabric. Seniors First includes our placemats as part of birthday gifts delivered to their Meals on Wheels and other program clients.

    Large Drawstring Bags

    Another great stash buster for a good cause are the drawstring bags (takes about 1 yard of fabric) that are given to kids aging out of foster care who would otherwise use a large plastic garbage bag to carry their clothes and belongings. Jan mentioned that smaller bags were also needed so check with her at the next meeting.

    QuiltCon and Festival of Trees quilts
    Committees will be set up to design and coordinate these annual projects.

    Linda Hungerford from Flourishing Palms

    I have been a sewist since the age of 13 when my mother made me sew a tent dress! I transitioned from garment-making to quiltmaking in 1976, when quiltmaking saw a resurgence in popularity due to our country’s Bicentennial. In 1998 I began domestic machine quilting because hiring a longarm quilter, quite honestly, didn’t fit my budget.
    Since graduating with a journalism degree in 2000, I have written articles for numerous quilting magazines, and had several patterns published. In 2005 I began teaching free, five-week beginner quiltmaking lessons. As a result of those classes, Landauer Publishing invited me to write First Time Quiltmaking (2006). I’m honored to have had quilts accepted into three QuiltCons, one of which is included in the book Modern Quilts: Designs of the New Century (2017, C&T Publishing).
    In 2012 we moved from West Des Moines, Iowa to The Villages, Florida, where I have continued to teach. In 2015 I presented the MQG webinar “No Tails Binding: Mitered Corners by Machine.” Most frequently I teach domestic machine walking foot and free motion quilting. I have also been demonstrating ruler quilting.
    The Central Florida chapter of the MQG started in my living room in the fall of 2012 (CentralFloridaMQG.blogspot.com). I have been on the chapter’s executive committee ever since, and am currently media coordinator. I’ve blogged at FlourishingPalms.blogspot.com since January, 2009, and am on Instagram and Pinterest as FlourishingPalms.

    February BOM - Use those tiny scraps

    We are making use of those tiny scraps in a very simple, graphic, block. You will need:
    • small scraps of similar color
    • larger pieces of white
    • larger pieces of gray
    First, assemble some scraps of similar colors. Build a rectangular shape of your choice, max size around 8x8, but it can be smaller. For example, I collected some blue scrap and roughly set them together to be a rectangle. When you are finished sewing them, some scrap pieces will not be used and others will be trimmed to fit the final shape:




    Next, add a white piece to the left of the color rectangle and a gray piece to the right.  The only restriction is the total width should be 12.5 inches (or a bit longer if you prefer to trim at the end). Here is another example, using red.


    Next , build the top strip, white to the left and gray to the right:



    Finally, build the bottom strip in the same way, offsetting the white and gray segments. The only restriction is the total height should be at least 12.5 inches:


    Trim to 12.5 inches and ...done!

    February Newsletter

    Dear Guildies,

    Turning 10 has been a lot of fun.  February is officially the last month of our #10yearinthemaking celebration.  However, we have final gift for you in March: we are bringing Linda, from Central Florida MQG, for a lecture on Domestic Machine Quilting with Rulers.  If you are making blocks for the Wollongong Modern Quilt Guild, you might be inspired to sew Linda's Australia Tree Block.

    As we are wrapping things up, let's have a special show'n'tell from all the Interest Groups.  Bring any project, finished or not, that you have been inspired to sew this year.  We also want to invite you to participate in the Member Speed Trunk Show (see in the Programming section for details).

    And speaking of inspiration, we would love to see where you create; send us a short video (1 to 2 minutes), no sound recorded, we will show it at the meeting and we will have members narrate their sewing room video.  For those interested in participating, send an email to orlandomodernquiltguild@gmail.com.

      2019 had a lot going on!  Here is a recap of all the wonderful making and giving we have done this past year.

      Meals on Wheels
      Place mat donations in 2019: 132
      Place mat donations June 2018 - Jan. 2020: 527

      Calls for Blocks
      Charity Mailing: 128 heart blocks and 51 HSTs sent to Quilter’s Healing Hearts for Christ’s Church for the mass shootings in New Zealand, 3 quilts sent to the Omaha Modern Quilt Guild for flood victims in Omaha, Nebraska, 1 quilt was sent to El Paso Quilter’s Association for mass shooting victims, 9 quilts were sent to Quilts of Compassion in Toledo,OH(They distribute quilts to disaster victims).

      Currently we have 2 finished quilts. We have 10 quilts that need to be quilted and bound if any guild members would like to help out.

      Two quilts were made with Road to Tennessee blocks donated by members.  We still have blocks remaining to continue to make more quilts.  Keep those blocks coming!

      We would like to thank all of the OMQG members who have contributed their time at home, at the Daytona Retreat and at OMQG Sew Days to help provide these wonderful quilts to people in need!

      Festival of the Trees
      A beautiful quilt was donated and we should know at the February meeting how much money was raised from the raffle for the Orlando Museum of Art.

      QuiltCon
      Another beautiful quilt was sent to show at QuiltCon.  The theme this year was TEXT and the color palette shades of gray. Inspired by our Community Outreach drive for this year, our quilt has been designed around the word HOME, using log cabin blocks, and HOME written in different languages. Once the quilt is back, it will be donated to the Zebra Coalition.

      Zebra Coalition
      15 quilts were donated in November.  We still need about 7 more twin size (or close to twin size) to make our goal.  I know we can do it! We will have a final show and tell at the February meeting.

      We donated one quilt to Access Charter school for their school auction.

      And, I wanted to thank Jan B and those that have made so many drawstring bags for the kids aging out of the foster care system.

      I love being apart of this guild and the members who give with such a wonderful hearts.  Please continue to make place mats for Meals on Wheels and Road to Tennessee blocks.

      We are also collecting and sending 12.5" tree blocks to the Wollongong MQG for those affected by the Australian brush fires.

      End of Year Wrap Up
      Let's share what you worked on with any Special Interest groups. Group leaders and members are invited to share any positive experiences, skills learned or completed projects. Bring it to the February meeting for a special Show and Tell.
      New Year Challenge
      If you lost your Sewjo over the holidays, we want you to rediscover your creativity. Pick up that book/pattern you were once excited to make. Project does not have to be completed by the end of this challenge but actual sewing has to have taken place. Bring your progress to the March meeting. 
      Member Speed Trunk Show
      Let's share our love of Quilting in February.  Bring your favorite quilt project to share with the group. It should represent a project in which you learned a new technique or that you loved making. It's a great opportunity to share a bit of you.

      • I hope you're all reading Modern Monthly, the MQG quarterly magazine, it alway full of inspirations and interesting article.  This month, Dimi Atanasova's article, Quilt-Life Balance, as well as the link she shared on the Importance of Hobbie, got my attention.
      • Tthe Infinite Stitches Quilt Show 2020 is coming to the Crystal River Armory in Citrus County, on February 28 and 29th at the Crystal River Armory in Citrus County.
