Instructions - Call for Blocks 2023

There are two block options for this year.  Each block is only one or two colors.  Use solids or prints, but be sure the fabric "stand out" color is the one you have chosen for the block.  Use your scraps by using many shades of the color you choose.  Your block should be about 15" to 15.5" square.  Do not cut down or trim up - if needed, this will be handled later when they are assembled.

Option 1:  Quarter Log Cabin block

This is simple, yet very versatile.  This block uses 2.5" strips, with 1.5" strips in between.

Cutting instructions:

For each block you will need one of each of the following lengths of 2.5" strips:  1.5", 3.5", 4.5" 6.5", 7.5" 9.5", 10.5", 12.5" 13.5", and 15.5".  You will also need one of each of the following lengths of 1.5" strips:  1.5", 3.5", 4.5", 6.5", 7.5", 9.5", 10.5", 12.5", and 13.5".

Sewing instructions:

  • Sew together the 1.5" x 1.5" square and the 2.5" x 1.5" strip.
  • Next add the 2.5" x 3.5" strip as shown in the diagram.
  • Continue alternating, following the example above.

Option 2:  Inspired by Debra Jalbert - see this post

Start with a cute solid block of fabric about 16" square, which contrasts with the color you're using for the applique pieces.   Cut your applique fabrics, different shades of your color of choice, into various sizes and shapes.  You can use pinking shears to limit fraying in the wash.  Lay out the applique pieces on your large block, leaving space in between.  When you have an arrangement you like, pin, glue or fuse the applique pieces in place.  Stitch closely around the edges of them.

Have fun with these blocks and feel free to create something extraordinary!
