August Block of the Month and a Challenge

Paula selected the hashtag block as this month's Block Lotto block, and we are incorporating the finished block with a fun challenge.

Directions on how to make the blocks can be found on Sew Can She's blog.  The instructions are straight forward, and the block comes together quickly.  For the background fabrics, we are going with low volume (or white or cream if you don't have any low volume in your stash); use bright modern fabrics for the hashtag prints; square your block to 12.5" for a finished 12" size.  There you go!  As usual, every block made and brought to the August meeting gives you a ticket in the drawing for ALL the blocks; the more blocks you make, the better your chances for winning!

Now for the challenge part.  After you have made your hashtag block, take a selfie (or better yet, have someone take a picture of you) holding the block and post on Instagram, Facebook, and/or Twitter with the caption "I am #OrlandoMQG" and a brief introduction and/or fun fact about yourself.  Fun and easy, right?!  The best part is you get a chance to win a door prize (oh, did I forget to mention prizes were involved?!) even if you don't win the Block Lotto or can't make the meeting.

Here is a brief recap of the challenge:

  • Make the Hashtag block of the month
  • Take a selfie (or have someone snap a pic) holding your block
  • Post on Instagram, Twitter and/or Facebook with the sentence: "I am #OrlandoMQG"
  • Make sure you include the hashtag #OrlandoMQG
  • Introduce yourself and share a fun fact in the post description
  • Doing all of the above qualifies as an entry for a prize drawing
  • Have fun and don't overthink the challenge!

Calling All Bloggers!

Did you know we list our member bloggers on the left sidebar?  We have so many creative members, and it's nice to see what they are up to in between guild events.

Sewn With Curves
Our President Yanick is the featured quilter on Amy's blog this week.  Take a minute to read more about Yanick's artistic background, her passion for creating, and quilting tips.   There is some colorful eye candy there as well!

I noticed The Sewing Studio has updated their website to include a blog which features bios on the staff along with product features and tips not exclusive to quilting.

If you are a quilt blogger and are not listed on our sidebar, please let me know immediately so that can be rectified.  You can leave a comment here or email me (address in directory).

Have you thought about starting a blog, but not sure where to start?  I am sure any one of the bloggers listed on our site would be happy to help.  Feel free to leave any questions on this post.

Would you like to see a blog hop of all guild blogs with a last stop here for a giveaway?  Leave your comments and suggestions below and we will make it happen.  There will also be a random winner drawn from the comments on this post.  Suggest away!

Quilty Podcasts

With summer here many of us are taking trips, either on the road or in the air, which means time away from our sewing machines.  Many times my daughter has her headphones in listening to her music and my husband will have his music blaring on the car radio - this is usually my signal to put my OWN headphones in since my taste in music is not theirs!  To get my quilting fix, I will tune in to a quilty themed podcast.

Here are a few of my favorites:

While searching "Crafty Podcasts" I ran across this blog post which provides suggestions and links to other podcasts.

Do you regularly listen to podcasts?  If not, I suggest you giving it a try.  It helps pass the time while driving, or even sewing for that matter.  If so, what is your favorite podcast?  Leave a comment on this post (by the evening of August 4th) for a chance to win a door prize at next Wednesday's meeting.

Let's talk sewing machines

A recent guild meeting icebreaker question asked members to spill the beans on how many sewing machines they owned.   I'll not reveal the member with the most in case her husband is reading ;-)  This question got me thinking... Do you name your sewing machine(s)?

I do name my machines and you can meet them below.  These may or may not be all the sewing machines I have!

Meet Jewell
"Jewell" is my black 1938 featherweight, named after my paternal grandmother.

This is Dee
"Dee" is my mint green/white 1968 featherweight,  and named after my maternal grandmother.

Just Juki!
Not to play favorites, but my Juki is my favorite ;-)  I've tried to come up with a clever name for this machine, but keep coming back to "Juki".

how about Ruby?
This Janome Horizon was purchased while at SewDown Nashville and signed by my quilty friends, but so far I haven't spent much time getting to know her, so at the moment she does not have a name. Any suggestions?

So, tell us.  Do you name your machine(s)?  If so, what is the name(s)?  A random drawing (for a fun prize) from the comments left on this post will be made on Tuesday (March 31) before our next guild meeting (April  1).  Thanks for playing along.

Throwback Thursday: First Quilt

Are you familiar with Throwback Thursday on social media where people post pictures of themselves from "way back"?  I like the idea of a quilt version and have sometimes posted on my personal Instagram account pictures of quilts I have made years ago.

The first quilt I ever made was in a class at Queen Ann's Lace (Kissimmee LQS now closed) back in 2004 where our class of four each made a rail fence lap quilt.

AmERICa
I named the quilt AmERICa for my son Eric and the patriotic fabrics used.  I don't now what I was thinking by using red, white and blue variegated thread for quilting my very first quilt ever, but you know what they say "Go bold or go home"!  I used my walking foot and quilted straight lines going diagonally across each block.

Do you remember the first quilt you ever made?  Leave a comment describing your first quilt for a chance to win the next door prize in our getting to know you series.  I don't believe you can include a picture in your comment (correct me if I'm wrong), but please share a picture of your first quilt on our Facebook or Flickr page and/or tag us on Instagram and Twitter.

I look forward to reading about YOUR first quilt ever made.  [Also, feel free to email me (I'm in the directory) if you are having issues leaving comments on the blog.  If you are reading this through a blog reader app such as Bloglovin' that may be the problem.  Try going to our blog website directly and then typing in your comment.]
