October BOM - Shoo Fly

Here the recipe for this month Blocklotto:
  1. Select 2 fabrics - white for the background, and any color of your choice for the rest;
  2. Cut the following:
    background - 2 squares measuring 5", 1 square measuring 41/2"
    colour fabric - 2 squares measuring 5", 4 squares measuring 41/2"
  3. Mark a diagonal across the 5" white squares;
  4. With colour and white 5" squares together, sew a 1/4" seam allowance on each side of the marked diagonal.  Cut the 2 blocks along the diagonal, making 4 triangles;
  5. Press the triangles open, seams toward the darker fabric.  Trim to 41/2";
  6. 7.  and 8.  put together rows of squares according to the image bellow.  Press seams toward the darker side;
    9.  Matching corners, assemble the rows together.

Et voilà!  Here you have a Shoo Fly block.  Now go and sew one more for your anniversary quilt, or many more to increase your chance of wining them all.

October General Meeting Minutes

GENERAL MEETING
October 2, 2019 10 A.M.
THE SEWING STUDIO CLASSROOM

1. Welcome and Introduce Guests

Ede welcomes everyone to our 10th Anniversary Celebration Meeting.  61 people are attending the meeting.  Ede introduces the 4 members of the Sarasota Modern Quilt Guild and welcome 5 guests.

2. Officer Reports
a. President

Please mark your calendar, our first meeting of the year will be on January 8th 2020 as the Sewing Studio has the New Year sale the previous week.

Ede thanks Pamela, Beth and Rene for representing the OrlandoMQG at the Fiber Festival.  It was a great event, creating exposure for the Guild.  One of the favourite exhibit was the Under water crochet project.

b.Vice President

Block of the Month
Susan is the lucky winner of August and September BOM, although there were 2 different random draws.  We can't wait to see the quilt(s) she will sew.

Debbe presents October BOM: as we all gearing for the end of the year celebrations, Debbe chose an easy block, the Shoo Fly block.  You can use any colour as long the background is white.  The instructions will be on the blog very soon.

Call for Block - Road to Tennessee block drawing

Kelly reminds that whoever brought the most Road to Tennessee blocks is getting a gift card from the Sewing Studio.  Catherine Carr send a massive 65 blocks and won the gift card.  Thank you Catherine for your wonderful contribution.  Alissa has volunteered to mail to card to Catherine.  Keep the blocks coming, we will have another draw next month.

Pincushion parade and swap

Thank you Debbie for being the master organiser behind this swap with the Sarasota Modern Quilt Guild.

Julie (President), Cary, Joy (Treasure) and Jenni brought their guild's pincushions for the exchange as well as a bottle of 'adult beverage' which will be enjoyed at our next Sewing Retreat.

Julie explains that their Guild is now year 2 old.  Jenni was the first president.  There are 2 guilds in Sarasota:  the first one is limited to 50 members, so Jenny started a second one and it has ground to over 70 people.  The Guild meets the 1st Thursdays of the month at 6pm, they just had their first ever retreat.  More details about the Sarasota Modern Quilt Guild can be found on their social platforms: Website, Facebook, Instagram.

The Sarasota Modern Quilt guild recently had a presentation on how to transform antic glasses into pincushions, so there might be some in the exchange.  Please share your pincushion on Instagram with the hashtag #s2mqg.

c. Treasurer - Financial Report
We had 4 new members joining the Guild in August.  So far our spending is in line with the budget.

3. Library Spotlight
As Aradria is unwell and couldn’t be at the meeting, there's no Library Spotlight.  Members who borrowed a book at the last meeting, get to keep it for an extra month.

4. Quilty Basket
The Quilty Basket is presented by Ede, and won by Betty.

6. Programming:  Ten Years in the Making!

Rene, founder of the guild along with Michele, shares why and how the Guild came to exist:

"Once upon the time there was a  quilter who didn't have anyone to play with.  None of her friends were interested in quilt making and although her family was indulgent they didn't really get this newfound OBSESSION she had with taking fabric, cutting it into pieces and putting it back together again.

But then she discovered the online community of quilters which opened up a whole new world.  She started her own quilt blog and 'met' other quilters, including one who lived locally (Michele Lancaster).  Also around that time this modern quilt movement was happening and there was a group in LA that seem to be having a lot of fun and encouraging other areas to start their own fun group.  So she contacted them and was told there was not a guild in Orlando but that she could start one and she was like 'no I don't think so" and they were like 'yes I think you can do it' and she's like 'no I don't think I can", and they were like 'yes you can and we will help you'.

So fast forward three months of planning, emailing, etc and on March 2nd or 3rd of 2010 the historic first meeting of the Orlando Modern Quilt Guild was held.  I didn't know what to expect.  Many had express interest online, but who know if anyone would show up - beside Hope, Michel and myself.  But there were 16 of us at that very first meeting which was held in the small classroom behind the register over there at the Sewing Studio - thanks for Julia Hunt for arranging that.  People were excited to form 'their own' guild - since I had never attended a guild meeting before I was in favour of making it the way the members wanted.  There were no 'rules' other than what we chose.

There've been a lot of changes since then - the Sewing Studio has grown, our guild has grown.  I could go on and on and on about the Orlando Modern Quilt Guild - it's one of my favourite topics but I know that we are short on time so if anyone has any questions I can answer those or I can keep talking, but bottom line is this group is awesome and amazing and talented and diverse and inspiring - but most especially it is a fun, welcoming, and nice group of people!

Oh and the quilter in the story who didn't have anyone to play with, now she has lots and lots of friends to play with!"

Beth talks about the first charity drive the Guild got involved in - quilts were made and brought to a Nursing home in the Dr Philipps area.

i. Slide Show
The Slide show can be found on YouTube: HERE.

ii. Mini show and tell of “first projects”

Yanick - Jacquie Gering; Ede - Carolyn Friedlander; Rene and Beth and Katherine Robinson - Robert Kauffman challenge;  Connie - Mandilie class;  Julie - Jacquie Gering (second visit); Leslie  - fabric challenge; Kara - Amada Jean class

Ede encouraged everyone to join a class with the guild as it is always a great opportunity to meet people, even if you are not interested in the technical aspect.

iii. Guild gift!

Yes, we all got a fancy fan, and some cupcakes.

7. Show and Tell

Press on the picture to start the video, and on the rectangle at the bottom right for full screen.

As we warp the meeting, Ede thanks everybody in attendance and also explains that this guild wouldn't be what it is without members' participation and as the elections for the new board are approaching, she encourages everyone to think about getting involved.

October Newsletter

Issue 44

September 29th, 2019

Dear Guildies,

This is it! We are ready to celebrate our Guild's 10th anniversary.  There will be surprises,  a walk down to memory lane, some food (maybe, probably), some guests...  We can't wait to have you all around to celebrate 10 years of Modern quilting.
We can promise a very busy program, in addition to the celebrations, we do have some catch up to do after last month's cancelled meeting.  We are going to have two BOM drawing.  Bring September and October blocks.  You still have some time to sew a couple of blocks, and remember to keep one for yourself so you'll have your own 10th anniversary celebratory quilt at the end of the year.

Also, the registration deadline for the retreat is October 7th.  If you haven't yet secure your room follow this link.

Happy stitching,

Caroline Garnier Janny
Secretary

Questions, comments, or suggestions regarding the newsletter are welcome, please email me. I would also love to hear of any quilty news or ideas for content you'd like to share.  Constructive feedback is always welcome.

MEETING REMINDERS

    COMMUNITY OUTREACH
    Kelly Eskin

10 years! I can't believe this guild has been together and giving back to our community for 10 years.  What an accomplishment!  I know the guild has made a significant impact on my life, so I can only imagine how our guild has impacted our community.  I've been apart of the guild for 5 years and since then we have been involved in giving quilts to veterans, foster kids, children healing from a variety of pain and hurts, people with Alzheimer's, and we cannot forget the victims and those involved with the Pulse tragedy.  It is such a testament to the people in our guild.

With that in mind, keep working on those twin sized quilts for the Zebra Coalition.  We'd love to be able to give the organization 10 or so quilts in November.  Next month will be our team show and tell for Zebra Coalition.

The Festival of the Trees and QuiltCon subcommittees are working on getting their quilts finished.  I can't wait to see them both.

Thanks to all that made the Road to Tennessee blocks for our Call for Blocks. For the next two months, we will be giving out a special gift to the person that completes the most blocks.   Here is a link to the blog post with the instructions.     It really is a simple block - why not make 1 or 10 for the October and November meetings.

    PROGRAMMING
    Yanick Booz

In addition to the 10th anniversary celebration, we will have a Pin Cushion Parade.  If you have registered for the PinPal exchange, it is now time to bring your pin cushion to the meeting.  Place it in a brown bag, add a little note with something about yourself, your quilting, your pincushion.  Do you remember those penpal letters we wrote at school, they were sometimes awkward to write, but receiving them was so good.

If you have extra pincushions and you would like to enter them to the swap, please bring them.  We want to make sure we are matching Sarasota's numbers.

Please contact Ede or Yanick for any programming ideas, or send an email to orlandomodernquiltguild@gmail.com.

    MEMBER HIGHLIGHT

I am looking for members who would be willing to answer some questions about their creativity, their space, why they quilt or anything els.  I have some questions ready if it helps.  We are not looking for a long essay, but for lots of pictures.

Please contact me if you are willing to share with us.

      September Newsletter

      Issue 43

      September 1st, 2019

      Dear Guildies,

Unfortunately, due to weather conditions and the impending arrival (or not) of hurricane Dorian, we had to cancel the September General Meeting.  But don't despair, the 10th Anniversary Celebration is just postponed to October 2nd. This is THE meeting you will not want to miss.

In the meantime, I hope you will get some extra sewing time.  In case you need some inspiration, you can sew a couple of Blocks of the Month : September's BOM is HERE and October's one will be on the blog very soon, check the BOM page.  You can also make some Road to Tennessee blocks for our Call for Block drive, remember there will be a prize for the member who brings the most blocks to our next meeting.  It will also give you extra time to send in a quote about your OMQG experience, and find the project you made at the first OMQG class or guild challenge that you participated in.  Bring it to the meeting!

If you have registered to the PinPal swap, you now have an extra month to finish your pincushion and bring it to the October meeting in a small brown paper bag and include a short intro about yourself in the bag for the recipient.  Don't staple or tape the bag shut--we'll be having a pincushion parade at the meeting!

Now that the pumpkin spice flavours are out, it is time to plan for Holiday Celebrations. This year, the Guild will guild will be sponsoring food at each Sew Day location in December.  We need a 'Room Mom' for the 3 SewDays, to order and set up food.  Please let Beth Know if you are willing to help.

Finally, lets make sure your calendars are up to date:  our first meeting of 2020 will be on January 8th at the Sewing Studio.

Happy Labor Day and stay safe,

      Caroline Garnier Janny
      Secretary

        Marge Cree

The deadline for booking your spot at the Guild Retreat is approaching.  If you haven't booked your room yet, you have until October 7th at 5pm to do so and benefit from the negotiated rates.  The link is HERE.

In meantime, Marge is looking for Door prizes for the event.
        • Do you have a kit that you bought but know deep down that you will never get to?
        • Do you have a fat quarter bundle that you just couldn't refuse but have no idea what to do with it?
        • Do you have a quilting tool or ruler that you know you will never use again?

        September BOM Throwback

This month our block is a throwback to the very first Block of the Month posted on the Orlando Modern Quilt Guild Blog. Go back and take a peek at the 2011 BOM Scot's Plaid. We are using the same directions, with an alternate choice of fabric to make a replica block.

Fabric:  Jelly rolls work great with this block besides the one white square, all other pieces are 2.5" wide.

For one block, you will need:

One 4.5" square of a white solid or white on white
Two strips 2.5"x 4.5" of a light  grey
One 2.5" square of a light grey fabric
Two strips 2.5"x 6.5" of a dark grey or black fabric
One 2.5" square of a dark grey or black fabric.

        * Dark grey or black can be used
        * Specks of color within the fabric will cause some interest.

Use a scant 1/4 inch stitch to assemble this 8.5 inch block.

Stitch the light grey 2.5" square to the 6.5" dark grey piece.
Stitch the dark grey 2.5" square to the 4.5" light grey piece.
Stitch the light grey 4.5" piece to the white square.

Stitch the remaining block sections as shown.
