August Newsletter

Issue 42

August 4th, 2019

Hello Quilty Friends,

Have you noticed pumpkins decors are back?  This can only means that Summer is almost over and school will start very soon.  Oh, does Back to School get you excited?  I feel that it is the perfect time to start anew, reassess my goals, make short term resolutions, buy new pens and notebooks...

In the spirit of being all organised and ahead of the game, I am sharing with you my ToDo list for our General Meeting, which will be held on AUGUST 14th, at 10am at the Sewing Studio:
  • Sew a couple of BOMs, there will be an additional drawing this month, don't want to miss it.  The block instructions are HERE on the blog.
  • Bring and wear my Name Tag for a chance to win a quilty gift.
  • Register for the retreat HERE.  Dates are November 7th to 11th in Daytona and it is going to be a blast.
  • Register for the PinPals cushion swap with the South Sarasota MQG :  HERE, deadline is August 14th.
  • Bring Community Outreach blocks:  Call for Blocks drive (the instructions are HERE), Zebra Coalition group quilt blocks, QuiltCon and Festival of Trees.
In other news, the Orlando MQG will be participating to the Fiber Fest on September 29, 1-5.  Can you spare an hour and help run this event?  We want  to showcase handwork, EPP demos, sashiko, appliqué...

We frequently get requests to the guild email to have T-shirt quilts made. If anyone in the guild has a business making these, or knows someone who does, please pass their info on to Orlandomodernquiltguild@gmail.com.

Finally, there will be an OrlandoMQG Board meeting following our August general meeting at Luke's Kitchen. All are welcome to attend, just send an email to the guild to confirm you're attendance.
Questions, comments, or suggestions regarding the newsletter are welcome, please email me. I would also love to hear of any quilty news or ideas for content you'd like to share.  Constructive feedback is always welcome.

Happy stitching,

Caroline Garnier
Secretary

The Sun Painting class taught by Claudia was a big hit! Beth hosted it at her house and we had a great time. We enjoyed learning something new, went home with some beautiful new fabrics, and all had lunch together!

Participants are asked to bring their fabrics, or something made with the fabrics, to the meeting for a Show'n'Tell.

    Thank you Claudia and Beth!

PS. If you weren't able to participate, the class will be offered again.
      COMMUNITY OUTREACH
      Kelly Eskin

Thank you all for your contribution to our community outreach this past year.  What you do really does make a difference.  We recently received some feedback from Seniors First about the Meals on Wheels place mats and I wanted to share it with you. This is from Senior's First -  "The client told us (Meals on Wheels) that he eats all is meals with that placemat and it brightens his day. He said 'he would not even think about having a meal without it.'  So thank you for brightening someone's day!

The Festival of Trees committee has purchased the fabric and the blocks are being completed.  Below is a sneak peek of the pattern.

The Zebra Coalition teams are also well on their way to a show and tell in October.  Here is one team's completed top.  I can't wait to see what the rest of the teams make. If you aren't part of team - you can still make a twin sized quilt for the Zebra Coalition.  Maybe you have a pattern you've been meaning to make or a UFO that can easily be sized up to twin.  The plan is to give them the quilts in October and February.  We have a goal of 25 quilts for their housing programs.

Finally, please continue to bring in Road to Tennessee blocks for our Call to Blocks team.  It is a really simple block to put together and can make things so much easier when a call for quilts to made.  Here is a link to the blog post with the instructions.   Since February we have sent out at least 4 quilts to various parts of the world.  Quilts for Pulse had such an impact on our community and as a group it is important for us to be able to reciprocate those feelings.

      Thanks! Kelly

        Yanick Booz

This month we are celebrating Handwork!  It might not be everybody cup of tea, but for some the action of the hand pushing a needle is very soothing.  We would love to share your special talents, tips.  Please contact Yanick, if you can take part of the Handwork Presentation.

Speaking of celebration,  our September meeting will be dedicated to celebrating our Guild 10th anniversary.  Yes 10 years of quilting and friendship!  If you have photos and reminiscences of the early years of the guild, please share them with us via email to orlandomodernquiltguild@gmail.com?  Something special is being prepared, you will not want to miss this meeting!
