Instructions: Call for Blocks 2024 - Square-in-a-Square

This year's Call for Blocks is a Square-in-a-Square Block and can be completed in three sizes.

Jelly Roll Piecing Method

Finished Size: 6.5" x 6.5"
Materials: 2.5" strips

Square Method

Finished Size: 8.5" x 8.5"
Materials: 10" and 5" squares

Finished Size: 6.5" x 6.5"
Materials: 8" and 4" squares

Make sure your larger square won't show through your smaller square - this method doesn't involve traditional piecing, and the larger block fabric will remain behind the entire smaller block.

Your iron is the key to the block!

Fold the larger square in half vertically and press the crease. Open the block up and fold ithorizontally. Press that crease. Do the same for the smaller block.

Place the smaller square right side up on the right side of the larger square. Center the smaller square using the fold lines.

Now fold the left side of the larger square so that it is even with the side of the 5” square and nearly meets the center fold line. Iron a crease, and do the same for the right side. Sew these seams a scant 1/4” from the fold. Press open.

Now rotate the block ¼ turn and do the same with the remaining 2 sides of the smaller square.

Trim your square to the finished size listed above.
