Art 31 at the Maitland Art Museum

Back in March, our Guild was invited to participate in Maitland Art Museum’s Art 31 program for a month-long celebration highlighting the fiber arts.

It was a great opportunity for the Guild and we had so much fun talking to visitors at the historic Waterhouse Residence about the art AND history of quilting.  We flew quilts on the big wrap-around porch as beacons for anyone visiting the park on campus to come in and find out more as we demonstrated the way we practice the art form today.

We even started a group quilt while we were there as we learned about the history of the home and presented it to the Museum as a celebration of community partnership (if you missed the gifting presentation – see the video here and here).

And now, we’ve been invited back!  This time for two days only but during the 42nd Maitland Rotary Art Festival, November 17-18, 2018 at Lake Lily Park.  If you missed the chance to sign up in March, or want experience it again, here’s your opportunity!  Follow the link to Signupgenius to register.

September Block of the Month

Here it is - the September BOM

Slab Block Quilt Block

Video  photo and block instructions courtesy of Cheryl Arkinson , and thank you to Orlando MQG Karol Evans for the BOM suggestion .

This will be a fun, big block to make.  Here are are the guidelines from Karol :

Finished block size - 14.5 "
All slabs for each block should be in the same color family (greens, purples, pinks, etc)
Cheryl's instructions include a small block of white - Karol says to include that if you want !

Here are the instructions  according to Cheryl Arkison's blog :

"Take two pieces of fabric and sew them together. Do that a few more times. Then start sewing more pieces to those first pairs. Sew groups together. Add additional pieces of fabric as necessary to get up to your finished size. Start with small bits or big ones, it doesn't matter. Raid your scrap bins and go with what you've got"

Here is a link to a great You Tube video with the tutorial

Good luck ... this will make a really fun win for someone !

PAINTBRUSH STUDIOS FABRIC CHALLENGE

Paintbrush Studios has been so kind and generous in donating fabric bundles to our guild; when they heard we were having a color challenge, they went above and beyond!

If you didn't get your bundle at the meeting and would like to participate, contact Ede and she will get a bundle to you.

The bundle has five fabrics in it.  You must use all five in your quilt. You may add ONE additional fabric, if you choose, which must be a SOLID.

Size is approximately 12 x 18 inches--place mat size!  Of course, if you want to participate in the challenge and make something for yourself, that's absolutely fine, but if you want to participate just for the challenge, you can donate what you make to our place mat drive for Meals on Wheels!

Mini-quilts are due at the NOVEMBER meeting.  Our discussion of color theory in quilts will continue at the October meeting, which might give you some extra ideas about color choices for the mini-quilt.

As always, please do not take a fabric bundle if you don't plan to participate in the challenge.

When posting on social media, please use the hashtag #pbstudiofabrics, and make sure to include a shout out thanking Paintbrush Studios for their so generous support of our guild!
