General Meeting Minutes
Orlando Modern Quilt Guild
August 2020
President Ede Nault opened the meeting at 10:10 AM on the Zoom virtual format .
Ede reported that the guild has a new, paid Zoom account so everyone has the opportunity to host a sew day (or night) if they want. Please contact the guild through the email address, or VP of programming Debra Jalbert to let her know if you want to host a sew day.
Maitland sew days have been canceled for August. They are keeping in touch with us about future dates available.
Ede also reported that unfortunately, the retreat has been canceled for fall 2020; there are too many unknowns right now with the pandemic to plan a multi-day type event.
Ede and Rene attended to a virtual quilt retreat seminar online, from Silicon Valley MQG. The online workshop shared a whole host of information about a virtual retreat and how to produce one. She explained in detail what it could entail, and the board is interested in pursuing the idea, but volunteers are needed to help execute the event. Please email the guild to let the board know you could help.
The Sewing Studio, our regular meeting host location, is continuing to honor the quilt guild discount by showing your Orlando MQG membership card at the register.
Global Quilt Connection is online, and Ede, Rene and Marge are attending today. Debra Jalbert will be presenting her class options as a vendor. It is a forum for quilt teachers and leaders to advertise what they have offer as far as classes, workshops. and lectures to guilds and like- minded groups.
The guild has arranged for lectures and workshops for the guild virtually. Our guild response has shown they really don’t want a 6 hour continuous class, so shorter lectures and classes are the general way the guild will move forward. Stay tuned for more to come.
Sewing room videos were shown by Ede, participants this month were:
Dawn Vanderwolf
Ashley Gottshalk
Dianna Mattoni
Vice President Debra Jalbert welcomed the group once again , and discussed programming.
It’s a Wrap - September is the completion date for the next project; please use the hashtag when posting on social media .
Virtual sew days coming up in August - see newsletter for details, and an ask was made to please consider hosting also. The guild will schedule the zoom and send out the code email if you are hosting.

Debra reported that we will be having a live show and tell on August 26 starting
at 7 PM on Zoom. It should be a fun, relaxing evening where we get to hear about member’s projects and discuss and ask questions , etc .
Ede reported for education - Marge was absent.
Social Justice Sewing Academy lecture /presentation will be next Thursday, August 13. All members are invited to attend at no charge, although you can make a donation thru Paypal if you want. All proceeds go to the SJSA. Ede reported about Sarah Trail, her credentials and that we are looking forward to this presentation. Please advertise it on social media so we can have great attendance.
Aradria contributed to conversation about what an incredible speaker she is, and encouraged everyone to attend.
The class that Rene Martinez is teaching is currently happening. We had a great response to the class form the guild members. Please let Rene know if you have not received your supplies yet. She also has sent out the first recorded video to view before we meet online as a group in the live presentation. Please let her know if you haven’t received the link.
She also reported that due to the pandemic , Amy Friend will not be doing the live workshop as previously scheduled to the guild , but the bord has agreed for her to do a trunk show and lecture on October 17 , 2020 via Zoom . More information will be coming. There will be no cost to our members.
It was brought to attention that the board/guild has made great strides in the past few months re-working the programming and workshop schedule due to the pandemic, and are happy to present the Laura Heine Collage Class, the SJSA presentation and the Amy Friend online lecture at no charge to our members .
Aradria , Cserscervits , Orlando MQG Librarian, spotlighted the Curated Quilts Magazine issue that is available for members to check out. She talked about what a great magazine it is please take advantage of checking them out. Half square triangles is the current issue.
Debra introduced Ashley Gottshalk, a Orlando MQG member, who presented a 20 min program in the ongoing series on Japanese quilting entitled “Wabi Sabi, Boro, and Kintsugi, Embracing the Art of Imperfection” There was time for Ashley to answer a few questions and answers on the topic after the presentation.
The virtual slideshow for member’s submitted show and tell projects was presented.
