Issue 53
It's August!  I don't usually wish for time to rush by--normally, I wish it would slow down--but I can't say I'll be sorry to see 2020 go on by.  While we're waiting and hoping for a return to some semblance of normality, though, the guild continues to plan activities to keep you engaged and creative while we're spending most of our time at home.

This month, we are hosting Sara Trail, from the Social Justice Sewing Academy.  I hope you're looking forward to hearing from her as much as I am.  She is a dynamic and committed young woman who has created an equally dynamic organization dedicated to empowering children and young adults by using sewing as a means of both personal expression and as a medium for social protest.  It promises to be an exceptional evening.  If you are a member, you do not need to register--the Zoom code will be emailed to all members 24 hours prior to the event--but you may make a donation to SJSA using our PayPal  account.  Non-members who wish to register may make a donation using PayPal as well, and that will register you for the lecture.

In other plans, we're introducing a virtual Show and Tell night on August 26 ,
from 7-8:30 pm!  We've all loved watching Paula's wonderful videos of member work, but we've also missed hearing our members talk about the work they've made--who it was made for, why they made it, struggles, successes, etc.  So let's meet virtually and discuss!

You can show work that has already appeared in one of the meeting videos, or work that hasn't been shown.  Feel free to also share works in progress--this is a great opportunity to ask questions, or to share a new technique or fabulous fabric!  If you'd like to present, either email the guild or me, just so we can have a list of people who'd like to speak.

I miss seeing all of you in person--so much--but I'm so grateful for the time we do get to spend together via the magic of Zoom!  Hope you'll join us for all that we have planned!
Ede

We are so excited to announce that Sara Trail, from the Social Justice Sewing Academy, will be a guest speaker for the Orlando Modern Quilt Guild on Aug 13 at 7 pm, via Zoom.

If you are not familiar with SJSA, please visit their website to see the incredible work they are doing in providing "hands-on workshops in schools, prisons and community centers across the country. SJSA empowers youth to use textile art as a vehicle for personal transformation and community cohesion and become agents of social change." Their exhibit at Quiltcon has been one of the most visually exciting and thought-provoking areas of the quilt show.

Orlando MQG is sharing this experience with our members FREE, although members may make a donation to SJSA if they wish.

We are also going to be opening this lecture to non-members, for a suggested donation of $10 or more ($5 minimum). Orlando MQG will donate 100% of the proceeds from this event to directly support SJSA and further their mission.

This will be a compelling presentation by an organization that's inspiring a generation of change.  In addition, it's helping children and young adults to discover a love of sewing, and using textile arts as a means of personal expression, in addition to amplifying their voices in calls for change.

With regret, we have decided to cancel our in-person retreat scheduled for November of this year.  There is just too much uncertainty concerning the pandemic, and the health and well-being of our members is always our first concern.  However, a virtual retreat may be possible!

Ede and Rene' attended a presentation by Silicon Valley MQG about their virtual retreat--they shared some wonderful ideas!  All we need now is for members to help organize!  If you're interested, please email either the guild or Ede.

Hello Friends!  Are you keeping your sanity?  Are you sewing up a storm?  I know I am, it just keeps me sane (not insane).   I have about 5 charity donation quilts done and finishing up some of my UFO’s.
              • This week I attended a lecture/trunk show with Jen Kingwell hosted by the Triad Modern Quilt Guild.  It was just great, hard to believe that we can see such beautiful quilts from a renowed teacher who lives across the world!  It was easy, all I had to do was send a small donation, which they donated to a local food bank,  and they sent me the link to the Zoom meeting.  I got to attend their small business meeting before.  Just to let you know, they are doing the same things we are doing with Zoom meetings and show n tells and offering virtual classes.
              • A few of the board members will be attending a presentation of teachers around the world hosted by The Global Quilt Connection.  These 3 Zoom meetings will give teachers, who have a virtual presence, the opportunity to tell us what types of classes they have to offer.   More to folllow on this.
              Upcoming Events

Laurie Heine Collage Class – Rene Martinez, Instructor
For those of you who signed up for the Laura Heine class, the 1st video class has been posted and supplies are being distributed this month.  Rene has scheduled the next classes.  If you signed up for the class and have not been notified please let us know ASAP.
