August 2023 General Meeting Minutes

President Marge Cree welcomed everyone to the August 2023 General Meeting. A number of business items were reviewed:

  • A reminder that we still need someone to be the team lead for the Retreat; a number of volunteers are already signed up to help, but an overall coordinator is needed.  Also, don't forget to email Cathy Caldes after you've booked your room to let her know you're attending, along with the names of anyone else you are rooming with.
  • The group we're donating quilts to this year (Impower) asked if anyone was willing to sew a cushion for a sofa at their site; Julie Becker volunteered - thank you Julie!
  • An email was received in our main email account asking if anyone could do quilt repair - if you are interested, please email Marge Cree.
  • Pamela Edwards has two quilts showing at the Atlanta Quilt Festival - see the newsletter for more information.  Congratulations Pamela!
  • The Board is looking for people willing to step us as officers for the 2024-2025 term. Almost all current Board members have already served at least two years and will be stepping down from their current positions, so more volunteers are needed. If you are interested in serving the Guild, please email Marge Cree or the main email at orlandomodernquiltguild@gmail.com
Education update:  Debby Manuel, our Education Coordinator, gave an overview of the upcoming Improv Wreath Workshop being held on August 26, and taught by member Ellen Gordon. Information is also available in the newsletter. Spots in the workshop are still available, so please email Debby if you'd like to attend.

Community Outreach update: Karol Evans, our Outreach Coordinator, shared that 16 quilts were dropped off at the Impower "Village" recently, and an additional 6 quilts for smaller children were given to House Next Door. Also, our Festival of Trees quilt, being led by Ashley Gottshalk, is moving along, and the QuiltCon quilt pattern has been selected ("Nomad" by Squats and Running Stitches).  If you want to participate in helping with either of these two charity quilts, let Karol know!

Block of the Month: Nancy Madigan won the August blocks!

Nancy Reed, our BOM Coordinator, shared the September BOM. Instructions will be going out in a separate email.

Education Basket - Paula Kennedy won this month's raffle basket!

Cara Dobrev, our Vice President, presented this month's programming covering two topics: a quick overview of the Modern Quilt Guild website and its many resources, and a program on quilt labeling - both of which were very interesting and created a lot of discussion among attendees. She talked about the Quilt Alliance and its labeling guidelines - more on that can be found HERE.

Just a reminder that in the September meeting we will be sharing the postcards we made with the information from the August meeting, and we will see the Kawandi quilt challenge reveals - so don't forget to bring your items if you participated in either of these events!

Show 'N Tell displayed amazing work by our members!
