January Block of the Month – OMQG
Raffle at next meeting, Wednesday , Feb 7

The Sightly Valentine Subtle Wonky Improv Block!

Supplies and instructions:

Please use quilt store quality cotton solid fabrics
Red centers 2.5 x 2.5
Not trimmed or trimmed to about 11”

So, this block has been churning my head for a while.  I love improv where you can add and add fabric and shapes and see what you come up with!

Valentines, because we will begin the construction with a 2.5 x 2.5 true red center for the block. (I used Kona red) and it will give the final outcome quilt just a slight amount of consistency throughout the blocks.

If you have never made this block, here’s a tutorial on the construction for the “Standard” wonky log cabin block:

http://www.quiltdad.com/2009/09/quilt-along-3-wonky-log-cabin-block.html

I started with the red center, and some got a little smaller, but generally I tried to keep the center at 2.5 x 2.5 square

My fabric pieces after the red center were all widths, and all solid colors (each block I did had 9-11 different solid colors, but you could re-use colors if you don’t have that many colors. ) The lengths can be wider, narrower, wonky, (although too wonky throws it off quite a bit and results in having to use more fabric to get it to trim up in the end. I found out I like subtle wonky, like Quilt Dad

My blocks were trimmed to 10” square … that being said, I had originally planned for them to be large, but because they were really wonky, I had to take off a lot more than planned to square them up. (Again, subtle wonky)

My suggestion is to NOT trim them, or trim to at least 11” if you can and let the new
owner /winner of the blocks trim as necessary.

Here is some inspiration of what you could do with these happy, wonky, valentine blocks
Good Luck!
