February 2021 Newsletter

                                                February 2021 Newsletter

Issue 58
Welcome back!  I hope you all had some time to enjoy the holidays with friends and family, at least virtually.  I think we can all begin 2021 with a renewed sense of hope and optimism.

We WILL be back together in our wonderful room at the Sewing Studio sometime this year.  Realistically, we're probably looking at late summer.  In the meantime, we have a LOT planned, for both our virtual and in-person meetings.  New techniques, guest speakers, teachers, Sew Days--our year is going to be filled with fun and creativity!  This month starts our registration process for 2021-22. ( Kathy will explain what's new this year at the meeting and watch your email for updates.)

My sewjo went missing completely in December but has recently returned.  To help me stay on track, I've joined a 50-day WIP challenge run by Flying Goose Studio.  If you feel like you need a jumpstart to your year, check out her blog or follow her on Instagram.  Let's make 2021 a year full of creativity, productivity and (finally)  in-person COMMUNITY!

Exchange Day is the 3rd Monday of the month

Upcoming Sewing Studio Exchange Days -
              February 15, and March 15

The exchange days have been a great success! They are a great way to safely say hello to fellow members .... almost like a mini-meeting. These exchange days are helping us get needed items distibuted until we are able to meet in person to exchange outreach items, supplies ,
            library books , etc.

Please let me know if you need me to collect or distribute something for you. I am in the Sewing Studio parking lot from 10:00 am -11:00 am each exchange day.

Leslie Gale is collecting batting scraps, piecing them together and cutting them into placemat size. Come by and grab a few to make placemats for Seniors First Meals on Wheels program clients.
It’s a great way to use up scraps!
I also have guild labels for the charity quilts that you make.

See you at the Sewing Studio on Exchange Day !

                Foster Baby Quilts

We currently have nearly 30 baby quilts to present to Summit. We’re planning the final presentation for some time at the end of March. The final collection date will be March 15th, the March Sewing Studio Exchange day.
Quilts can be brought to the February or March exchange days or set up delivery to Sharleen or myself.

Thanks for all of the beautiful quilts so far. We will have photos of the entire group after the presentation. So far there are six completed quilts from the retreat baby blocks, thanks to everyone who made a block, completed a top or quilted them. It was truly a group effort. I expect that we will have 10 completed matching retreat baby block quilts when we are done.

                The Quilts of Gee’s Bend
                By: Susan Goldman Rubin

Since the early nineteenth century, the women of Gee’s Bend in southern Alabama have created stunning, vibrant quilts. In the only photo-essay book about the quilts of Gee’s Bend for children, award-winning author Susan Goldman Rubin explores the history and culture of this fascinating group of women and their unique quilting traditions. Rubin uses meticulous research to offer an exclusive look at an important facet of African American art and culture.

This book should be of great interest to classrooms, libraries, and those interested in African American art in the United States, in addition to quilting, life in early emancipated colonies in the South, and Gee’s Bends importance in the Civil Right’s movement. The quilts and the incredible stories behind them are powerful motivators for anyone who wishes to accomplish anything. A map, directions on how to make a quilt square, endnotes, and an index round out this stunning nonfiction book.
