Issue 56

The holidays are almost here!

Have you been working on holiday sewing?  As always, I'm behind, but hoping to get caught up at our RETREAT!  We've been bowled over by the response to our virtual retreat.  THANK YOU to Marge Cree and the rest of the retreat committee (Aradria, Ashley, Dawn, Kathy C, Michele L, Debby M, Mary S, Love, Paula K, Rene', Sue and Zonetta) for your enthusiasm and wonderful ideas.

And thank you to Mary S., Karol and Ashley for agreeing to serve on this year's nominating committee.  Please contact one of them ASAP if you are interested in serving on the Board next year.

Looking ahead, we have LOTS of Sew Days scheduled in November and December, and will soon have January as well!  If you haven't tried a virtual sew day yet, I encourage you to give it a go.  It's a great way to get to know some of the other members, and have some social time from a safe distance!

One important note:  we will NOT have a general meeting in January (scheduled for Jan 6.)  We'd like to give everyone who has been working so hard to keep the guild going in these difficult times a little extra time to enjoy their families and rest and relax.  We will still have January Sew Days and another Show and Tell night to look forward to!  In the meantime,

Happy Thanksgiving to you all!
Ede

              Baby Quilt update
Latest count is just over 50 baby quilts. Sharleen and Sara are busy photographing the quilts. We will be able to share the photos after the first delivery on November 10. At this point it is probably best to hold onto any other baby quilts that are out there. We are planning a second and final delivery of quilts in March. We’ll start collecting for the March delivery after the start of the year.  What a great response to our current project. Thank you to all of the members that have turned in quilts so far.

              Call for Blocks/Charity Quilts update-
Currently on hold. Please hold onto any charity quilts that you may have. We will let you know when this starts up again.

              Festival of Trees Quilt
We have a quilt for this year’s Festival of Trees! The binding is done , and waiitng for the quilt sleeve to be finished ! A special thanks to Rene Martinez for letting us use her own pattern design and for the elves that measured, cut, pieced, sewed, quilted and bound this years’ effort. It was definitely a quick group effort.

Donation for 2020 Festival of Trees, Orlando Museum of Art
The Festival of Trees Auction and drawings will also be virtual this year , so you can purchase drawing tickets and bid online . Click here and you'll be sent a link when it goes live!

              Placemats and Drawstring bags
We are continuing the collection of placemats and drawstring bags. Please keep up the effort. Remember what a great way both projects are for cleaning out your stash. Hint: cleaning out your stash gives you room for new fabric.

SWAP DAY at THE SEWING STUDIO
We have instituted a monthly Swap Day at the Sewing Studio for handing in books, picking up books, turning in quilts, placemats and drawstring bags, exchanging whatever between members. Aradria and I are scheduling to be at the Sewing Studio on the Third Monday of the month at 10:00 AM. There were 8 of us there in October and it worked out well to exchange what needed to be turned in or carried to a third person. Please email Aradria or myself if you need to get something to or from either of us. We’re hoping this helps get things done during this very strange time. Plus it was so nice to see everyone in person...

              IT’S A WRAP
              Debby Manuel

Our UFO finishers have finished 3 of the 4 projects we selected to Wrap Up this year.  Our latest number is #1 on our lists.  We could complete a binding, a quilt top or finishing off a project that needed something small such as a name tag.  Whatever needs doing to be able to say It’s a Wrap!  Hoping our Sewcation on November 6 and 7 helps get some of those completed and we can announce once again It’s a Wrap!

Finished needle-turn applique digital lessons on quilt.com with Mary Sorenson.  Now to work on borders, but goal has been met for It’s a Wrap!

              The Mystery Quilt Instructions
have all been sent to members
(last set of clues sent was October 7).

Now it's time to make sure you complete the quilt with quilting, binding and photographing! When finished, please be sure to email a photo here to be included in the Mystery Quilt slideshow
              for February .

Hello Friends.  Hope you are doing fine….

Another month of limited social life but more sewing time has me finishing lot of old UFO’s.

For those of you who attended, I hope you enjoyed the Amy Friend lecture; boy, she sure is talented! I’m a big fan of hers , and enjoyed spending time with her.

Since we are getting accustomed to Zoom presentations (for those of us who attended Rene Martinez’s class & Amy Friend lecture) we will be doing some of the same next year.  I will be planning 2021’s education.

We have contracted with Jacquie Gering to visit in  September 2021, that will probably be our first on site class.  So I would like to add a few  online classes but want to ensure they will be interesting to you.

Please see the link below and sign up with the Quilt Connection to discover teachers that are offering online classes.  I’ve attended 3 of these presentations and it was beneficial.  If you see someone that you would like to learn from please let me know and if we have enough interest I will book them for our guild.

              Thanks, Marge Cree

Orlando MQG Member Mary Smart gave us a very informative update at last month's meeting regarding the upcoming virtual quilt show and event .

Presented by the Modern Quilt Guild, QuiltCon is the largest modern quilting show of its kind.

Each year, thousands of attendees come to see over nearly 600 modern quilts on display, including 400 juried in from MQG members around the world. This brand new online version of QuiltCon will still feature a juried quilt show as well as top notch workshops and lectures. The five day event will include live lectures, panels, and tours, as well as on-demand workshops and many opportunities for socialization, as well as a vendor's forum where there is sure to be plenty of great discounts and products available.

Many Orlando MQG members have expressed how they have adapted well to online learning, and this is a perfect opportunity to learn and take advantage of your Modern Quilt Guild membership .

You can learn about individual expert makers as well as hear about how to refresh your creative process, different ways to tackle secondary designs, and more.

All QuiltCon Together lectures will be presented live! Classes and workshops will be a mixture of live and recorded presentations, depending on the level of class you choose.
