Issue 57

As 2020 (finally) winds down, I've been trying to focus on the things I'm grateful for about this long, difficult year, instead of focusing on all the things I've missed.  One huge bright spot has been the Orlando Modern Quilt Guild!  I'm so happy that so many of you have embraced our new virtual existence.

Our Sewcation Staycation was an unbelievable success--we never thought we'd have 60 participants when we started planning!  It was two FUN days of talking, laughing, sharing tips, playing games, and even some sewing took place!  I hope, now that you've experienced virtual group sewing, you'll join in on some of the many, many virtual Sew Days we have scheduled in December and January.  Remember--there will NOT be a general meeting in January, so take advantage of the Sew Days to spend some time with your guild friends!

I'm also extremely grateful for the other members of the Board of Directors and their hard work in keeping the guild active and engaged.  They never fail to come through with ideas, enthusiasm, humor and positive thinking.  I'm so lucky to be part of such a great group of women!

Holidays are going to look different this year, but I hope you'll still find time to spend with family and friends, even via Zoom.  Drop in for a chat!  I wish you all the very best during this holiday season and look forward to brighter days ahead in 2021.  See you in February (via Zoom, of course....)

Ede

              A Request From a Member ....

              Dear Members,

If you have any jeans (condition does not matter) or any fabric (including scraps, orphan blocks, UFOs never to finish, etc). Would you consider donating them for donation quilts?

The organization is Prayers & Squares.  The quilts are given to parents for babies, children and adults who are sick, and loss of loved ones.  I can meet anyone on the third Monday of the month for donations at the Sewing Studio.

If you have any to contribute , please contact me
              here .

              Thank you,
              Pamela Edwards

                                                                                Sue Kenard, Chairman

              COMMUNITY OUTREACH REPORT

              Call for Blocks/Charity Quilts-
We have received a request for quilts from a group in Oregon that is working with families impacted by the recent fires. A package is on the way to them. We have additional quilt kits (top, backing, batting, etc.) if you are interested in completing a charity quilt. I will have these kits at the monthly Swap Days at the Sewing Studio. Come take one and finish it at your leisure.

              Baby Quilt Delivery-
The first group of our baby quilts has been delivered, a whopping 54 quilts. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for your generosity. I was blown away by the variety of quilts. A special THANK YOU to Sharleen and Sarah for delivering the quilts and capturing the event in a video for us. See attached LINK to view the presentation.
There will be a second delivery of quilts in March. We already have 6-8 quilts donated for that. Keep up the good work. Get finished baby quilts to Sharleen or I can collect them at a Swap Day.

              Retreat Baby Quilt Blocks-
There were three different sets of fat quarters in the retreat swag bags. (see attached photo) The finished blocks are being collected and we will make as many baby quilts as we can for the March delivery. The tops are being put together now, looking for quilters willing to quilt a small quilt or two. I will be collecting any blocks that you have finished at the December and January swap days.

Again, thank you for all of your ongoing support to the guild’s community projects. Keep up the drawstring bags and placemats, they are so quick to do and a great way to use your “why did I buy that” fabric.

Blessings to you and yours, hope to see all of you in person in the new year.
              Sue

              Debby Manuel

Our UFO finishers have finished 3 of the 4 projects we selected to Wrap Up this year.  Our latest number is #1 on our lists.  We could complete a binding, a quilt top or finishing off a project that needed something small such as a name tag.  Whatever needs doing to be able to say It’s a Wrap!

Betty Baker finished these cute fabric lollipops for It's a Wrap !

Hello Friends.  Hope you are doing fine….I sure hope your Thanksgiving was fun but safe.  I have been busy making Christmas gifts, it’s funny, I have all year to make these but for some reason I always start in November, I guess I like the rush!

Well the retreat is over and now I can relax for a few weeks, however, the 2021 schedule is on my mind.  In a previous newsletter, I asked if anyone has suggestions for a teacher in 2021, but not much response.

Please look at Global Quilt Connection at the
GQC website here there is so much information on teachers doing virtual classes.

              Here’s some teachers you may be interested in;
take a look and give me feedback
              .

If you’d like to check out these or other titles please contact Aradria Csercsevits by December 13th. Contact info is in the guild directory.

              INSPIRING IMPROV
              by Nicholas Ball

No patterns here, but definitely a plan!
Explore the freeing power of improvised piecing with Nicholas Ball in his first book, Inspiring Improv. Learn his step-by-step technique-based process to explore six fundamental piecing structures. Practice how to stitch fabric together in an improvisational manner to create blocks or sections before using them to sew unique quilts all your own.
Improv piecing doesn't have to mean chaotic end results. Look to the eight original projects included to see how to create sophisticated quilts with structure focusing on repeating blocks or large-scale scrappy designs. Follow along as Nicholas walks you through his original inspiration and follow his plan through to finished pieces, as he discusses which combination of his core piecing methods he used, and how to achieve showstopping, exciting work.
From simple strip piecing through to complex circles and rings, you will be eager to experiment with making slabs, gentle curves, insets, triangles and even 9-patch and Log Cabin stacks. In no time, you'll be using them as a stepping stone to sewing original full-sized improvisational designs.
