November 2013 Block of the Month: Modern Maple

November's block of the month is a 12.5" square maple block.  This is a pretty traditional block that has been around for quite awhile but has recently reappeared in some pretty cool quilt projects.  This one by Carla of Grace and Favour is my favorite.

There are several tutorials for this block out there, but I had a difficult time finding directions for a 12.5" block until I found this tutorial by Angela of All Patched Up. 

Use neutral or low volume fabrics for the background and modern print fabric for the leaves to make a 12.5" unfinished square block.  For the sample block I went with a scrappy background but kept the leaf prints all the same.  Browse the gallery of modern maple quilts and other projects I linked to above and have fun making this block your own.
