November 2024 Meeting Minutes

 

Announcements
We're looking for members who are interested in running for Vice President, Education Coordinator, and Community Outreach Coordinator. We also need one more member to serve on the nomination committee. Reach out to the guild email if you are interested!

To celebrate the guild's 15th anniversary, we will be hosting a social on March 15, 2025 at the First Congregational Church of Winter Park.

Orlando MQG is participating in a cross-country mini quilt swap. The SEWN Swap features guilds from the South (Orlando), East (DC), West (Denver), and North (Chicago). More details and the signup link have been sent to members!

Treasurer's Report
Ellen presented the Treasurer's report, which is also available by request. 

Upcoming Events
Our Holiday Social is coming up in December (it occurs during our General Meeting). We traditionally host an exchange during this meeting - this year we will be exchanging pot holders! Get creative with how you make yours, we just ask that it truly functions as a pot holder. Insul-Bright makes for a great batting material, as well as multiple layers of old towels or cotton batting.

The Retreat is this month! Let Marge know if you want to participate as a day visitor. Emails have gone out to those who registered for the retreat.

Education
We will be hosting a workshop by David Owen Hastings - Inspired by Art!

12 - 6 PM
$70 for members

We will have our first Virtual Lecture on Thursday, January 9, 2025. Timna Tarr will present "Before and After - Repeating Patterns". In this lecture she will show the utilitarian quilts from her life, and how they planted the seeds that became the contemporary works that she now creates.

Cara won both the Education Basket AND the block of the month!



Programming
Ede presented on Paper Piecing! She shared the traditional method and Tara Faughnan's method that allows you to skip the paper tearing phase.

October 2024 Meeting Minutes

 

Cara, President, welcomed one returning visitor and one new member.

Announcements
The updated directory was sent to members on September 30. If you did not receive the updated directory, please reach out to the guild email.

We're looking for members who are interested in running for Vice President, Education Coordinator, or Community Outreach Coordinator. We also need three members to serve on the nomination committee. Reach out to the guild email if you are interested!

Treasurer's Report
Ellen presented the Treasurer's report, which is also available by request. We are currently carrying a $10k balance but are planning on finding ways to use our funds in a way that benefits the most members possible. We plan to carry a consistent reserve of $5k.

Upcoming Events
In addition to our usual events, we will be participating in International Scrap Sorting Day on November 2nd (join us in our virtual sew day!) and we will host our first Sew Night on zoom on November 7.

Marge Cree is hosting a fabric sale to help reduce some of our member's stashes. Knock on her door between 10 and 6 on October 9 or 10 to shop - fabric is $1/pound.

Library Update
If you haven't checked it out yet - take a look at the "Libby" app. You can sign in with your library card and it gives you virtual access to many of your library's resources! There are plenty of quilting magazines available for perusal.

Retreat Update
Let Marge know if you want to be a day visitor, we have some space. If you are planning to attend, olease register by October 15.

September 2024 Meeting Minutes

  

Retreat Coordinator Marge Cree reminded members to let her know if they are planning to attend the retreat and to let her know if they have any roommates.

President Cara Dobrev shared a few local events:

Member Kelly Morton shared a volunteering opportunity with Central Florida Dreamplex. They offer sewing classes twice per week for people with varying disabilities and are always looking for knowledgable sewists and crafters to support. Member at Large Ashley Gottshalk welcomed 1 new members, 1 returning member, and 1 guest. She then led us all in a "Never Have I Ever" activity - turns out everyone has experienced having to rip out the same seam twice!

Community Outreach

Karol, our Community Outreach Chair, shared that we recently donated 20 placemats to Meals on Wheels, 10 cat mats to shelters, and 1 dog bed and 15 quilts to Harbor House. Karol let us know we have 3 extraordinary charity quilts on hand - let her know if you know of an organization that could use a quilt to raise donations!

Education

Bradie's Bag Making workshop in September is full! If you are joining Sew Day on the same day please consider bringing a handwork project.

Festival of Trees Quilt

The top has been assembled! The quilt will be debuted soon.

QuiltCon Quilt

The QuiltCon quilt top was finished at the most recent Sew Day and quilted by Priscilla prior to our meeting. All that remains is the binding! The pattern is "Eye of the Tiger" from an older issue of Quilt Life. Pam enlarged the FPP pattern to create a larger finished quilt. It looks wonderful!



Modern Traditionalism Challenge Reveal

Members revealed their challenge results! Two participants were randomly selected to win Sewing Studio gift cards for their participation.
