September 2023 General Meeting Minutes

President Marge Cree welcomed everyone to the September 2023 General Meeting. A number of business items were reviewed, and the following leaders provided updates:

Karol Evans - Outreach

  • If you signed up to help with QuiltCon or Festival of Trees quilts, there will be a group at the Maitland sew day on Monday September 11 that will be working on them
  • 16 quilts were delivered to Impower, and 6 additional are ready to go to House Next Door
  • A slide-show played of the quilts that were donated to Impower - very beautiful work by our members!
Debby Manuel - Education
  • The Improv Wreath workshop in August was attended by 10 people (see pictures below)
  • Debby is interested in having members provide input on what you want for education and/or workshops
    • Teachers are getting more expensive, and don't want to travel; they are preferring to do classes by Zoom
    • Debby proposed an option for us to do a hybrid if people would be interested - rent a room with a large TV, where we can get together but the teacher would still be remote
    • Please email Debby with your input!
  • Thank you to Ellen Gordon for teaching a great workshop - feedback from those attending was very positive (and take a look at Ellen's beautifully-finished Improv Wreath!)

Cara Dobrev, our Vice President, gave an overview of QuiltCon, and members who have attended shared their experiences and tips for attending.  She also encouraged members to check out the MQG website!

Ginny Chambers, leader of the Kawandi challenge, had the members who participated in this activity come up and show off their work. Two of the participants were awarded (random ticket draw) a Sewing Studio gift card - Shelley Doyal and Paula Sheron were the lucky winners!

Marge talked about our sew days and mentioned that the Jacksonville Quilt Show is coming up (see the newsletter). She also shared some of the fabric postcards that were completed.

Beth Schmidt gave an overview of the upcoming Retreat, sharing that there are games, fun, and you can work on whatever you want! Deadline to sign up is October 9 (a reminder email went out to members on Sept 6 with all the room rates and other key information).

Marge also provided information on the December General Meeting, which is a holiday party.  The swap project for this year is a needle book - please make one and bring to the December meeting if you want to participate!  There are lots of free patterns available on the internet - just Google "needle book free patterns" and they will come up for you.

Member Leslie Gale is coordinating an excursion to the Albin Polasek Museum to view the Japanese embroidery exhibit and have a private tour with the artist. If you are interested in joining please contact Leslie directly (her email is in the directory).

Kathy Aber won the Block of the Month blocks for September!

Nancy Reed, our BOM coordinator, showed the October block called the Framed Scraps block. Instructions will be going out to members on Sept 7.

Chris Shirk was our Raffle Basket winner this month!

Marge also mentioned that Susan Hannah is taking over as Librarian for the Guild - please email her if you'd like any books from the library going forward!

Finally, another great Show and Tell by our members:
