April 2023 General Meeting

President Marge Cree welcomed everyone to the April 2023 General Meeting.  Another very large turnout, with extra chairs needed to be set up in the back!

Our first speaker was guest Katie Moore from Impower, the group we're working with for our outreach quilts this year.  Katie told us that, other than quilts, they have a wish list on their website for other items that they need for the Village, where these young men and women live (see https://www.impowerfl.org/get-involved/wish-list/ ).  It was a very heartwarming and educational overview of what Impower does for youth that are aging out of foster care or are homeless.  Please consider working on charity quilts for this great organization!

Next were a number of reports from our leaders:

  • Treasurer Pamela Edwards updated us on our membership drive.
  • Karol Evans, Community Outreach chair, had quilt kits available for those who could take them home to quilt, and reminded us that we're still doing placemats, pillowcases (instructions on the blog) and drawstring bags.
  • Education chair Debby Manuel gave us an overview of an upcoming virtual workshop with Libs Elliott on June 3; an email went out on April 5 to members with all the information needed to register.
  • Beth Schmidt, who handles the Call for Blocks program, showed us what the 2023-24 blocks will be (instructions will go out soon, and will be posted on the blog).  Also, she will have packets of last year's blocks at the next meeting for those willing to put them together into quilt tops!
  • Nancy Reed, our Block-of-the-Month coordinator, introduced the May block, which is the potato chip block.  Email with instructions will go out on April 6 - look for it in your mailbox!  The winner of the April Block-of-the-Month was Annie O'Brien!

  • Our Charity Basket winner, proceeds of which go towards our education fund, was Ede Nault!

Our main program today was an overview and REVEAL of the Round Robin quilts that two groups worked on over the past year.  Paula Kennedy talked us through how this activity worked, from making a medallion to adding borders, who participated, and then revealed the two beautiful quilts that our members finished - both of which will go to charities for use in fundraising activities.  One of the charities is the Grace Medical Home, recommended by member Doreen Licitra.  If you want more information about this deserving organization, see their website HERE.

Finally, our members shared teacher and technique options that they would like to hear about in our upcoming program year.  All ideas were appreciated!
