March 2023 General Meeting

 


President Marge Cree welcomed everyone to the March 2023 General Meeting.  There were a large turnout (about 60 people) and lots of new members and guests!  



Treasurer Pamela Edwards had a long line of people waiting to pay their annual dues:


Kathy Aber, 2022-23 Community Outreach Coordinator, gave us a recap of the charity quilts and other items that the Guild made during the past year:

  • 31 pillowcases for Harbor House and the Orlando Rescue Mission
  • 174 placemats for the Seniors First Meals on Wheels birthday gifts
  • 30 drawstring bags for the Legal Aid Society of the Orange County Bar Association, who provides them to the Guardian Ad Litem (foster care) program
  • 45 quilt blocks in Ukrainian blue and yellow sent to Claudia Pfeil to use for the Piecing for Peace project
  • 46 quilts and 48 pillowcase for Ukrainian refugees, mailed to Poland by the Quilted Twins shop in Dade City
  • Festival of Trees quilt for the Orlando Museum of Art fundraising
  • QuiltCon charity quilt to be donated to the Adult Literacy League in Orlando for fundraising
  • 250 pounds of fabric, notions, thread and other supplies sent to the Navajo Quilt Project
  • 326 blocks for our 2022 Call for Blocks to be used when emergency disaster requests are received
  • 43 quilts donated to House Next Door in Deland, a counseling and support center
  • 72 'clothing covers' donated to the Carolina Village, an assisted living and medical care center
  • 5 quilts for a family in Kentucky impacted by the storm disaster
  • and last but not least, the 2020 and 2022 QuiltCon quilts were delivered to the Zebra Coalition
Karol Evans, our Community Outreach Coordinator for 2023-24, gave an overview of the organization we're supporting for this year - the Village at Impower, transitional housing for homeless and foster youth between the ages of 18-24.  

Our quilty basket winner was Jane Allingham and Block-of-the-Month winner was Doreen Licitra. Nancy Reed, our 2023-24 BOM Coordinator, introduced our April BOM - she's calling it the 2-color rectangle block.



Our guest speaker was Irene Roderick - she shared her journey of improv quilting with photos of quilts she has made over the years.  She was inspirational, and her work is absolutely beautiful, winning a number of awards in various quilt shows, including QuiltCon!  Check out her website HERE.


Our Mystery quilts were revealed!



And as usual, there were beautiful items shared by our members during Show & Tell:
