Issue 49

March 30, 2020

The Orlando Modern Quilt Guild is meeting online this month; please read below for the information to get connected !

The world has changed a lot since our last newsletter.

There is not much to be said that you haven't seen in literally every other newspaper , blog, website, television or any form of social media . Please stay home, stay healthy , and it's important to remember to reach out to someone for a friendly phone call, an online call with a friend or relative with Zoom or FaceTime . Share your creative makes during this time with the many avenues of social media . You will surely inspire someone who might need a little extra push to keep a routine going in this new normal .

Please see below important information from our Community Outreach Committee on how to help by sewing masks for local hospitals or someone you know that needs one.

Paula Kennedy
Secretary

Questions, comments, or suggestions regarding the newsletter are welcome, please email me .  I would also love to hear of any quilty news or ideas for content you'd like to share.  Constructive feedback is always welcome.

Online meeting this month -
please read below on how to
connect !

Let’s meet up!  We will be conducting a virtual meeting  at our regularly scheduled time:
Wednesday, April 1, 2020
10:00 am
Via the Zoom Meeting application,
available online  HERE
Meeting Link ID  782-322-6478

1. You will need to download this app on your tablet or laptop. (You can also do it on your phone, but it doesn’t work as well there.)

2. To use the app on the day of our meeting, you will click on “join”. You will then be asked to enter a personal meeting ID,  (it's called Ede's meeting room!) It is a very simple process and a user friendly app!  You do not need to check your audio for sound, as everyone will be muted except the presenters Ede, Debra ,Marge and Sue.

3. It is not necessary for you to set up an account with Zoom in order for you to participate in the meeting, but you do need to have the software installed to attend the online meeting .

4. To improve the sound quality, all participants except those on the agenda will be muted.  If you have a concern or question you’d like to hear addressed during the meeting, please email the guild.

We will not be having a full meeting, obviously.  We anticipate it to last 30 min or less.  We won’t have programming, but we will update you on regular guild business, introduce our new block of the month….and roll out two fun new initiatives for this year that you won’t want to miss!

If you can’t make the meeting, or don’t want to use the app, we plan to upload the recorded meeting to our new YouTube channel (if technology cooperates!) here:
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCUB8pcAkpFeiXsRg5-Emetg?view_as=subscriber

If you have questions about any of this, please email the guild at: orlandomodernquiltguild@gmail.com
Hope you’ll join us for a little bit of fun and quilty friendship.  Stay safe and well!

        COMMUNITY OUTREACH
        Sue Kenard

        FACE MASKS
There have been a lot of questions and postings about making cloth face masks. We have been in contact with both hospital systems in our area. Both are in need of masks!  Here are some guidelines:
        • There are several videos showing patterns and instructions. It has been agreed that some variation of the 6” x 9” Deaconess Health Systems pattern is the best so far. (see videos also  by Missouri Star Quilt Company , The Sewing Studio, Joann Fabrics and Deaconess for ideas)
        • You can use elastic or ties. There are advantages to both but we quilters are more likely to run out of elastic before any of us run out of fabric.
        • Making them out of two different fabrics helps to tell which side was worn on the outside.
        • Wash the masks when you are done. Package masks together in Ziplock bag for transport.
        • Delivery- Orlando Health may be setting up tents for drop off. We will have more information about this when they let us know. We would like to set up some kind of porch drop off system.
        • If you have completed masks ready to donate, contact Sue Kenard. She will work with you to collect the masks. (skenard@outlook.com or text 407-421-7691)

This is a huge challenge that all of us can get behind!

IT'S A WRAP!- Debbie Manuel, Chairman
In order to finish UFOs/WIPS I need some motivation. Admit it - we all have them. If you are like me join us to get it done. So let’s WRAP THEM UP!
        This is how:
Choose 4 projects that you really want to finish
Write each project name next to a number on the attached sign-up sheet and post it where it will remind and motivate you.
(Thank you Caroline for passing on your work from the Cre-active Club)
If you want to be in the group,  email the guild here ,  I’ll email you when a number is chosen. Send me a picture or two so we can post before and afters.
When we have a meeting virtually or once we are back together a number will be selected and that is the project you can WRAP UP - giving you two months on each one. Then another number will be selected.
Once we are back together in person you’ll show off your finished project and your name will go in a drawing for your IT’S A WRAP door prize.
Some easy rules used in Cre-active that will continue:
To qualify, your projects must have been started in some ‘fibery” way: one block already made, or the fabric already cut, or the top almost finished and in need of quilting, or only adding a binding - your choice. If you don’t need two months to complete it combine 2 projects or stretch a complicated one to 4 months.
Join us by showing off your accomplishments proudly announcing: IT’S A WRAP!
        Thanks ! Debbie Manuel

We have a new quilt along this year! What is it? We can’t really tell you because.........IT’S A MYSTERY!!
Mary Smart will be guiding us through our first ever mystery quilt. This will be a throw size quilt, with lots of options for fabric choice and block placement.  Each month or so, Mary will email participants a new set of instructions. We will have a prize or two along the way, and a big reveal and show and tell after the first of the year! If you’re interested in participating, email the guild
here at and let them know you're interested in the  Mystery Quilt A Long !
