This month’s block was chosen by Kelly to give you a helpful block to
add to your wheelhouse. The half square
rectangle. About 5 years ago the Modern
Quilt Guild did a 100 Days of helpful blog posts. During the week on shapes, they did a
tutorial for the half square rectangle.
This tutorial was written by MQG Board Member Latifah Saafir who blogs
at The Quilt Engineer. We will be using her tutorial and you can
find the link here: https://themodernquiltguild.wordpress.com/2012/01/08/100-days-week-of-shapes-tutorial/
Instead of the dimensions in the
blog post, cut your fabric rectangles to be 5.5” x 10.5”. We will use a low volume fabric and a modern
green fabric. You will need to cut 2 low
volume pieces and two green pieces. They
can be the same fabric or you can use different fabrics to give it a different
feel. I used two different fabrics but
either choice is fine.
Unlike Half Square Triangles,
your diagonal line will be in the same orientation on both of your finished
Half Rectangle Triangles no matter how you turn it. You will need to make a set
of Half Rectangle Triangles with a diagonal line in the opposite direction.
We are going to make 2 sets of rectangles in opposite
directions to end with a 2 triangle shaped blocks of 9x10”.
Bring your blocks to the July 5th meeting. Since you are already making 2 blocks, why
not make 4 or 6? Your chances of winning the blocks grows and hopeful you will
go home with a whole bunch of blocks.
