Donation Quilts for Pulse Orlando Victims

Donation Quilt Information for Pulse Orlando Victims

First and foremost I want to thank each and every one of you for offering your help. I can't even believe this happened in our town, and am so thankful for any and all help you're willing to offer. As a quilt community we all love to give and love to help others, and a quilt drive was my immediate thought. Any survivors need to know they are loved and how better to accomplish that than by literally covering them in a quilt covered in hearts, and made with love?!

My idea is hearts in bright, rainbow colors to represent everyone affected, and obviously represent the love we are sending them. We will be using a tutorial from Cluck Cluck Sew to make 10" blocks. And I ask that the quilts be no smaller than 5 blocks wide and 6 blocks long. You're more than welcome to make them larger, I'd just like to keep them at the very least lap sized.

This is the tutorial I'd like us to use, and once more, a varying, rainbow of hearts in bright colors, with a low volume background. I think the 10" blocks will make the sewing a bit quicker, and give us more quilts for the victims. You can put the heart in rainbow order or not, that is up to you, but i would love for you to put a tag on the quilt so that the recipient knows who made the quilt for them.

The recipients will hopefully be the survivors and victims families, and those directly affected by the shooting, club owner, etc. I have multiple emails out, and will be updating everyone with more detailed information as I receive it. That includes where to send them. I'm trying to decide where a mass amount of mail will best be received ;) I'm thinking at my salon, since its commercial, but I'll post that info in the next day or two! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP! There is literally no way our guild could get this done without your help, and I want you to know how much we appreciate it! If you have any other questions please let me know, until then....sew on!

Alissa Lapinsky :)
President Orlando MQG

***Additional information (due dates, address, etc) will be posted the morning of Wednesday, June 15th****

We will be making that big one in the back....because we all have big hearts, right??!!

  1. So that I can use pre-cuts, can I make a quilt with smaller blocks? (I have a literal TON of 5 inch squares - so I could make a quilt using the smaller sized hearts.)

Are all types of fabrics welcome?

  6. I'd also love love love to help- I'm not a part of this guild (or any)- just a quilter from WA state, wanting to help in some way. I'm not sure I could get a full quilt done anytime soon (as my kids are out of school for summer)- but am wondering if I could make some heart blocks & send them to be put into a quilt?

  7. Thank you for organizing. I have shared this with the Boston MQG, a guild that organized a similar effort after the Marathon bombings. I know that what you are taking on right now is not a small task. With that, I must say THANK YOU! I witnessed what the quilting community is made of during that time and I have no doubt that they will respond equally here. If you have any questions or want any advise, please let us know. I live in St Cloud, FL and do not have the time to piece the individual blocks right now, but would be more than happy to piece the blocks into a quilt, especially if there is someone nearby who is a long-armer who could do the quilting. 1. The block was chosen because it is easy enough for a beginner. If you can't finish a top you can always send us the blocks. Check out the new blog post for further information on the #QuiltsForPulse project. Thank you so so much for your help. Every block counts! http://theorlandomodernquiltguild.blogspot.com/2016/06/details-for-quilts-for-pulse-donations.html?m=1

  54. This is fantastic!! Non-quilters really don't know what we do. I am in Nova Scotia but have wintered in Florida for ten years. Also I am a member of the rainbow community. I will gladly contribute in any way. I will be reading your blog tomorrow.

  56. I am coordinating an effort to make some finished quilt tops in the Wisconsin Midwest area. I am hoping a longarmer from the area will be able to help with machine quilting. If you want to represent the Midwest area and send blocks, I would welcome them. Maggie Lourim

  59. If you send me a bunch of blocks, I can make quilt tops very fast. Have plenty of extra fabric to fill things out. Can get them back to you fast. Will include $ to reimburse you for quick-ship postage. email me at launcher@cableone.net and I will send you the address.

  60. I do not quilt but would love to send some blocks. If I make just a few blocks, is that OK? Is it better to choose simple prints/designs so that you will be able to coordinate them with other blocks? Is a white background with a printed heart the best choice? Or it does not matter?

  62. A few years ago, I organized a similar endeavor after the Virginia Tech shooting; we sent more than 60 quilts to the survivors and families of the victims. I would like to donate this quilt if you would like it. It's not exactly what you asked for, but I think it is fitting. Please let me know if you would like me to send it. Peace to all of you. https://squareup.com/store/QuiltingAfterDark/item/full-spectrum
