Sew Day, December 13, 2013

There were many busy elves at the December Sew Day and Holiday Party held at the Dr. Phillips library.

Kathryn's beautiful art quilt with her hand printed fabrics.

Yanick was busy making gift card cases and coffee sleeves for her family.

Ellen was fabricating (get it?) gorgeous ornaments from strips of fabrics. They look so intricate, but she was whipping them up quickly.

Marge selected a layout for the ornament blocks that Yanick really won, but owed to Marge. There are some deals going down during our monthly meetings! Marge finished the top complete with red sashing. It looks fantastic. Do you recognize your block(s)?

We always starve at Sew Days. There's hardly anything to eat or drink. Yeah, you know better. Everything was delicious and festive.

Our littlest elf was a delight. She and her ponies (and mommy) constructed a beautiful quilt top. You should have seen her laying out her blocks on the floor like we do. I think we have a new quilter among us.

These brown paper bags contain mug rugs.

And here they all are. Click on the picture to see them closer. They were all very fun.

Happy Holidays!

January 2014 Block of the Month - Butterfly Block

Butterfly Block by Rachel at Four Wise Monkeys
Jodi found a fun block for our January block of the month. The Butterfly Block was created by Rachel who blogs at Four Wise Monkeys. These cute butterflies would make a cheery and colorful quilt.

Tutorial for Butterfly Block

The block should measure 8.5" x 8.5" to finish at 8" x 8". The color scheme is pink, yellow, and orange and the embroidered antennae are optional. Bring your block(s) to the January 8, 2014 guild meeting at The Sewing Studio in Maitland for a chance to win them all!

Election Process
Alejandrina outlined the Election Committee.  The members of the Election
Committee for the current election are:  Debbe King, Julia Hunt and Zonetta Glenn.

Ongoing Election Process
As the guild continues to grow, we need to formalize some of our procedures and let members know what those procedures are.  The Board just outlined the following procedures for the Election Process.

In November of each year the OMQG Board will select a committee of 3 members in good standing to serve as the Election Committee.  The members of the committee are ineligible to run for office during the election for which they serve on the Election Committee.

The committee will be charged with the following responsibilities:

Advertise the upcoming election, discuss duties and qualifications of positions with membership and accept nominations no later than the regular January Membership Meeting.

The Election Committee will accept absentee votes from members in good standing who are unable to attend the February Meeting.  This will be done in a time period selected by the committee sometime during January up through the day before the February Meeting; the committee has leeway to establish a specific date range during this time period. The purpose of absentee ballots is to encourage as much member participation as possible.
Our bylaws do specify that the ballots are secret, so it is anticipated that the committee will develop a confidential manner to handle absentee ballots.

Those voting in person at the February Meeting will be given a printed secret ballot.

The committee will track names of those eligible to vote (members in good standing) and will record all receiving a ballot, either absentee or in the person the morning of the vote.  The committee members will conduct the voting, tally and announce the results at the February Membership Meeting. (Exact vote counts will not be part of the public announcement, though the information is to be recorded in the event that any member requests the exact count.)

A simple majority of those voting is needed for a candidate to win the position.

New officers will assume their roles effective March 1.

Note: According to the OMQG Bylaws any current officer, who is available to continue in his role is eligible to continue in that position without a vote if there is no other member running for that office.

Ongoing Election Process-There are some adjustments to the process for the current election as we developed the guidelines midway through the election process.

The ongoing process as outlined above will be followed except for the following date changes:
The Board is appointing an Election Committee to begin work during December 2013.

All nominations are due by December 15th as previously announced.

Alejandrina asked members to indicate their interest in demos (about 20 minutes in length) at Sew Days in 2014. On what topics  would you like to see demos?  What demos would you be willing to do?
