August 2018 Block of the Month - Simple Butterfly

This month's block is a simple butterfly.




To make things a bit more interesting, I'm providing three sizes, all interlocking (12, 6 and 3 inches, finished) to make a non-traditional layout. Use blues and white/low volume. You can use the same blue for all elements or mix it up with multiple blues. It's a very simple block, so make more than one!!

Cutting instructions and counts:

Color
3” butterfly
6” butterfly
12” butterfly
Background (upper wings)
(1) 2.5” square
(1) 4” square
(1) 7” square
Background (tail wings)
(3) 1.75” squares
(3) 2.5” squares
(3) 4” squares
Blue (upper wings)
(1) 2.5 inch square
(1) 4” square
(1) 7” square
Blue (body)
(2) 1.25”  squares
(2) 2” squares
(2) 3.5” squares
Blue (tail wings)
(3) 1.75” squares
(3) 2.5” squares
(3) 4” squares






Detailed instructions:

Choose a size (3, 6 or 12 inch) and cut all the squares from the corresponding column in the table above. For example, to make a 6" block, you'll cut:

1 4.0" blue square
3 2.5" blue squares
1 4.0" background square
2 2" blue squares
3 2.5" background squares

 Pair one background and one blue square for the wings, large and small:




Stack the pairs right sides together and draw a diagonal line. Pin the sides:



Sew two seams on each stack, 1/4 inch from the center:



Cut down the line you marked:


Open each unit to reveal a half-square triangle. The unit will be a bit larger than needed. The units must be trimmed to these sizes:

Sizes after trimming HSTs:
Color
3” butterfly
6” butterfly
12” butterfly
Upper Wing
 2.0” square
3.5” square
6.5” square
Tail Wings
1.25” squares
2.0” squares
3.5” squares


For example, if you are making the 6" butterfly, the upper wing should be trimmed to 3.5". Make sure to lay the 45 degree line of the ruler over the seam:





Arrange all the trimmed units in sewing order:



Sew the units into three rows:



Finally sew the three rows together:

Hello to all of you who are sewing along with us on this beautiful Modern Sunset Skill Builder designed by Alyssa Lichner of Pile O' Fabric! And welcome to any of you who are just joining us now.  Remember--this is a completely SELF-PACED project.  Every month at our meeting, I will "assign" two new blocks, which will help those of us who plan to make the whole quilt stay on track to finish by the end of our program year, but you can make any number of blocks, in any combination, that you want!

Buzzing Bees

This year our Guild has decided to put the emphasis on getting to know each other.  Several initiatives have been put together, one of them being the Bee groups, either Improv Bees and Queen Bee.

Are you familiar with the concept of Quilting Bee?  Initially, it was a social gathering amongst quilters to make a quilt faster, each members would sew a block or more, and all together they will work on the top and eventually quilting it.  Things have evolved, but the goal stays the same.  If you want to find out more, go and check this article on Craftsy.

A few months have passed and we have started to see some interesting blocks popping up on social media or at Show’n’Tell at our meetings.  The Blue and Green Hives, and the Queen Bee, with 12 members each, and work on a monthly schedule.  Whereas the Yellow hive has 2 Queens and produces 2 blocks every other month.

So far we had some interesting prompt leading to even more interesting blocks.

The second month of the Improv Bee brought some bright blocks for Aradria.

If Improv is out of your comfort zone, don’t feel intimidated.  Start with small steps: do not use a ruler or a rotary cutter, go for solid or low volume fabric.  You can also get inspiration and tips from Sherry Lynwood book (The Improv Handbook for Modern Quilters - it is in our library!)

The Queen Bee, which work on a set block requested by the Queen bee each month, had some super nice results too.

Here is an article about Quilting Bee Etiquette.  My take on this, like in most life situation, communication is key.  To help with communication, Ashley recommends to create and share a Pinterest board.

As the months are going by and new prompts and blocks will be shared, I hope you will be inspired to join a Quilting bee.

The July Block of the Month

Hi Everybody !

 This month's BOM is from Jeff;  "The Illusion Block" , by Jenny Doan of Missouri Star Quilt Company, and is such a fun , interesting modern block . It makes a great look when the quilt is all put together ... let's see if we can make enough blocks to enter so someone can make a whole quilt !

  Jeff requests that we use real/bright white for the background , dark grey for the shadow , and something bold for the center ... a bright solid or graphic.  Something in a similar BW pattern like the one shown would make a beautiful quilt.
