Visiting Lecture: Sarah Trail

Visiting Lecture: Sara Trail

We are so excited to announce that Sara Trail, from the Social Justice Sewing Academy, will be a guest speaker for the Orlando Modern Quilt Guild on Aug 13 at 7 pm, via Zoom.

About Social Justice Sewing Academy

If you are not familiar with SJSA, please visit their website to see the incredible work they are doing in providing "hands-on workshops in schools, prisons and community centers across the country. SJSA empowers youth to use textile art as a vehicle for personal transformation and community cohesion and become agents of social change." Their exhibit at Quiltcon has been one of the most visually exciting and thought-provoking areas of the quilt show.

OrlandoMQG is sharing this experience with our members FREE,
via our general meeting Zoom code.

Issue 52
I'm hoping yet another month of meeting virtually is still finding you all safe and well.  Thank you so much for the excellent response we got from the survey we sent out last week!  Suddenly becoming a completely virtual entity has not been easy but the Board was buoyed by your many positive comments and suggestions.

We have so much planned!  Our founder, Rene' Martinez, is launching a new class (see details below) that I'm ridiculously excited to take. And we're talking with other organizations, teachers, designers, etc., about lectures/classes/trunk shows--
you name it!

And, you're going to have the opportunity to make a connection with a fellow guild member with our Christmas in July scrappy swap!  Our Cocktail with the Longarmers panel was fascinating--I got some great tips about quilt preparation--and it lessened some of the anxiety and insecurity I've had about sending one of my quilts to a longarmer.  If you missed it, you can watch it on our YouTube channel!

I hope you'll also think about joining us for one of our virtual Sew Days.  I've really enjoyed getting to know and talk with some members I haven't had the chance to sew with before.  We are a large guild and these virtual Sew Days have helped us make some connections with fellow members. Join us--and we'd love to know if you'd be willing to host a Sew Day as well.  Just email Debra, or the guild at orlandomodernquiltguild@gmail.com.

Looking forward to seeing you all on Wednesday!
Ede

It’s time for a Christmas in July Scrappy Gift Swap!  A swap with your fellow Orlando Modern Quilt Guild members. Everything will be from your scraps; no need to go shopping. You know your stash better than anyone!
If you would like to participate, email the guild at orlandomodernquiltguild@gmail.com by July 15th.
You will be emailed your "not so secret" swap partner.
Please ‘swap’ your gift before the September 3rd meeting. This will allow you 6 weeks to get to know your partner and create something special. See if you can make a gift your partner will enjoy receiving!
Scrappy Gifts will be sent by mail. (Or, you can do a porch drop off if your partner lives nearby.)
This swap will be maker-driven. Take a look at what you have on hand, and choose something you’ll enjoy making. Some suggestions for small gifts include: mug rugs; pouches; journal covers; potholders; soup bowl cozies; sunglass cases; baskets; pincushions; rotary cutter pouches; ruler pouches; coasters; etc. But hey, no masks! Most of us are pretty tired of sewing masks by now!
Here are some ideas, gathered in a Pinterest board that David Hastings from the Seattle Modern Quilt Guild has set up, to get your creative ideas flowing. Don’t feel limited by these ideas, this is your chance to make something of your choice! Visit David’s Pinterest Board for some fun ideas, https://www.pinterest.com/dohpinterest/scrappy-gifts/

It’s a Wrap has completed the first UFO on the list of four you chose to complete.   Here’s the one I finished after 3 years all pinned and waiting to be quilted.
My husband loves to nap with it.

If you’re ready for the next one on your list,
             it will be
#4, and it will be due in September.
Keep wrapping ‘em up!   Debby Manuel

Another set of clues will be revealed this Wednesday, July 1

                                                  Marge Cree, Chairman

In our everchanging world there are many ways to
            remain creative...

Have you wanted to try a virtual class, but don’t know how to
begin, and which one would be right for you?

Well, we have a surprise for you!

The Orlando MQG along with Rene Martinez  has developed a virtual class for our guild members.  Rene is a certified instructor of this beautiful collage quilt technique developed by Laura Heine  https://www.fiberworks-heine.com/ and she has put together online instructions that will step you through.  The class will include a combination of pre-recorded videos and live Zoom meetings to complete this Sewing Machine mini quilt.
As a gift to our members, the guild will be providing a kit with most of the recommended supplies needed for this project, you will supply your own fabrics.

            Here’s how it will work:

If you want to join this class all you have to do is purchase the pattern @ $25.00
You can write a check to Orlando MQG and send to Kathy Aber, or use this
            PayPal link.
This purchase will reserve your place in the class and let us know how many will attend.    The deadline to make the pattern purchase is July 10.  Your check or PayPal payment must have been received by the guild by that date if you want to receive the free materials kit from the guild.

This will give us time to purchase the required patterns and supplies and have them delivered to you.   Once you purchase you will receive a link to a pre-recorded video showing what additional supplies, such as fabric, you will need.  We will give you adequate time to collect your fabric choices.

After that, stay tuned for other information regarding three Zoom meetings and videos to complete the project.   The time frame for the Zoom meetings will start in August 2020,, but don’t worry if you are busy during that time because all Zoom meetings will be recorded so you can watch them
when it is most convenient for you !

This month What’s on the Bookshelf  features scrappy quilting books. I’ll be doing a presentation at the virtual meeting to introduce each title.

Orlando MQG Library is now open for drop off and pickups! Members are welcome to checkout books and pick them up from my home, just email or text me to request titles for check out, and set up a time to meet for pickup .You can also return books by dropping them off in a plastic bag; let me know via text or email you’ll be returning books you’ve checked out!

I’m in the process of updating the guild library catalog on the Orlando MQG blog. Newer titles haven’t been added in yet, so please feel free to ask if you don’t see something listed on the blog; we may already have the title!      Aradria
