August BOM Wonky Improv Stitch and Flip

This is a pretty simple block that will go well with the other quilt blocks we've been making this past year.

Fabric requirements:
  • (16)  3 1/2" gray background squares
  • (12)  2 1/2" color scraps (all the same color - pattern or solid) or (6) 2 1/2" squares cut into half square triangles
  • (4)    2 1/2" white scraps or (2) 2 1/2" white square cut into half square triangle.

Take four gray background squares and the white triangles.  Sew one white triangle to each of the four gray background squares, right sides together then flip the white fabric.   It can be as wonky as you want it to be, but the square should be trimmed to 3 1/2". Trim excess and press toward the darker fabric.

On the opposite corner from the white, sew one of of the colored triangles.  Again, it should be rather wonky, but it will need to be trimmed to 3 1/2".

Take eight gray squares and sew one of the colored triangles to any of the corners, in a wonky style making sure it will be trimmed to 3 1/2"

Sewing the squares together.  Take the four squares with the white corner and sew the squares together. The white corner should be at the center of the block and the colored corner will be on the opposite side.

Take two squares with the colored corner and sew them together with the colored corners meeting at the bottom.  Repeat for the the remaining six squares.

Sew one set of the colored squares to the top of the set of the white squares.  It will start to form a circle.  I find it helpful to lay the blocks out to be able to see the picture of the block you will be making.  Repeat sewing a set on the bottom of the block.

Take the remaining four gray squares and sew them on either side of the remaining two sets of colored squares.  The block is a row and column layout of 4x4 or 16 squares. The block makes a circle of wonky colored triangles with the middle being white.  Don't forget to make one for yourself as well!  They are pretty quick to make.

    MEMBER at LARGE
    Beth Schmidt

The Sun Painting class taught by Claudia was a big hit! Beth hosted it at her house and we had a great time. We enjoyed learning something new, went home with some beautiful new fabrics, and all had lunch together!

Participants are asked to bring their fabrics, or something made with the fabrics, to the meeting for a Show'n'Tell.

    Thank you Claudia and Beth!

PS. If you weren't able to participate, the class will be offered again.
      COMMUNITY OUTREACH
      Kelly Eskin

Thank you all for your contribution to our community outreach this past year.  What you do really does make a difference.  We recently received some feedback from Seniors First about the Meals on Wheels place mats and I wanted to share it with you. This is from Senior's First -  "The client told us (Meals on Wheels) that he eats all is meals with that placemat and it brightens his day. He said 'he would not even think about having a meal without it.'  So thank you for brightening someone's day!

The Festival of Trees committee has purchased the fabric and the blocks are being completed.  Below is a sneak peek of the pattern.

The Zebra Coalition teams are also well on their way to a show and tell in October.  Here is one team's completed top.  I can't wait to see what the rest of the teams make. If you aren't part of team - you can still make a twin sized quilt for the Zebra Coalition.  Maybe you have a pattern you've been meaning to make or a UFO that can easily be sized up to twin.  The plan is to give them the quilts in October and February.  We have a goal of 25 quilts for their housing programs.

Blue diamonds on an off-white background quilt

Finally, please continue to bring in Road to Tennessee blocks for our Call to Blocks team.  It is a really simple block to put together and can make things so much easier when a call for quilts to made.  Here is a link to the blog post with the instructions.   Since February we have sent out at least 4 quilts to various parts of the world.  Quilts for Pulse had such an impact on our community and as a group it is important for us to be able to reciprocate those feelings.

      Thanks! Kelly
        PROGRAMMING
        Yanick Booz

This month we are celebrating Handwork!  It might not be everybody cup of tea, but for some the action of the hand pushing a needle is very soothing.  We would love to share your special talents, tips.  Please contact Yanick, if you can take part of the Handwork Presentation.

Speaking of celebration,  our September meeting will be dedicated to celebrating our Guild 10th anniversary.  Yes 10 years of quilting and friendship!  If you have photos and reminiscences of the early years of the guild, please share them with us via email to orlandomodernquiltguild@gmail.com?  Something special is being prepared, you will not want to miss this meeting!
