General Meeting - June 5, 2019

Ede starts the meeting at 10:00 introducing guests and visitors.

SewDay - Oviedo location

Dar has secured the Casselberry Library for the Oviedo area SewDays.  The library is bigger and hopefully we will be able to secure a regular time and day onto on their schedule.  As a consequence, the June 29th Oviedo SewDay has been cancelled and is now scheduled on Saturday June 22nd at the new location.  You don't have to bring your machine to SewDays, you can practice hand skills.  Dar offers to demonstrate a special appliqué technique which involves glue and mystery pointy tools.

Icebreaker

Judy is collecting cooking recipes on behalf of Beth.  If you haven’t had a chance to do so yet, you can email your contribution to Beth.

Block of the Month

Marge is the winner of Hastag BOM.
Jeanne is presenting June Block Lotto:  it is a very simple and fast technique to make 4 HSTs at once.  Choose either a stripy fabric or make your own, and a white background.
The instructions are on the blog.
Jeanne’s tips:  because the finished HST will be on the bias, it is better to starsh the fabric before cutting.
Also, you are going to get 4 HSTs with this technique, giving 1 ticket for every HST.

Up cycling project - Drawstring bag for Legal Aid

It is heart breaking to know that youngsters aging out of foster system only receive a trash bag to pack their belongings   Jan is asking members to make drawstring bags that will be donated to the Legal Aid for those young people.  The bags can be made from scraps or one piece of fabric and any kind of string.  Jan will also accept donation of fabric for this project.  There is no deadline for this as it is an ongoing need.  You can find the instructions on the blog.

Yanick reminds members that we have an up-cycling challenge for End of the Year party.

Treasurer report

In the absence of Zonetta, Yanick gives the financial report to the Guild members.  Any questions can be sent to Zonetta.

Community Outreach

Kelly confirms that the Zebra Coalition teams have been set and emails sent to area coordinators.  You can still join any groups, just contact Kelly.  In addition, the Guild will be acceptation twin-size quilts made by individuals.  Pillow cases are also a good addition.

QuiltCon team is leaded by Kathy A.  Please contact her if you want to take part.

Festival of Trees:  Kate E. and Diane M. have volunteered to lead this project.  Get in touch with them if you want to contribute.

Call for blocks:  We have sent comfort quilts to Oklahoma.
Please keep the blocks coming, unfortunately there is always a need for more in order to keep our a well stocked inventory of comfort quilts.  The details for the Tennessee block are HERE.

Due to the very short turn around, the Guild as a whole won’t have the opportunity to participate to the Call for blocks from the Virgina Beach Modern Quilt Guild.  However, if you want to send block check their website.

We are still accepting Place mats for Meals on wheels.

Education

Alissa has extra kits from the Guicy Guice class if you want to buy it.
On the education pipeline, we have Amy Friend in March and Timna Tarr in April (her new class).

Claudia Dyer  is having a sun printing class on 19th of June, morning at Beth's (Titusville area).  This class has received a lot of interest, Claudia is kindly offering a second session (date to be determined).  Whoever wants to join the second class can contact Beth.

Quilty basket
Filled with books, fat quarters, charm square packs, threads, Cmas fabric, pattern, wine chocolate.  Thank you Kathy for bringing this.  Marge is the lucky winner.

Door prizes
And we have more winners!  Among the 56 members and guests in attendance, Laura, Judi, Sue, CC, Kara and one of our guests each won a door prize.

Tools and Quilting Notions Sales

It’s time to shop and socialised.

Show and Tell

No meeting will be complete without a show and tell.  In addition to our members’ show’n’tell, we got to present quilts that have been made by UCF Social Justice and Advocacy group in commemoration of the Pulse tragedy.

Here a short video of our members' Show'n'Tell and a very special guest!

June Newsletter

Issue 41

June 1st, 2019

Hello Quilty Friends,

Here we are, Summer has come with high temperatures, humidity... All the things we (I) love (not).  If you are like me and going to spend a bit more time indoors, it is probably the perfect time to tackle the clutter in the sewing room (if you don't have clutter in your sewing space, you're welcome to come and organise mine). Here are several ideas for you!
  1. Bring those patterns, kits, rulers and tools, books and magazines, all the notions, to our Tools and Notions sales at next week's General meeting.  We will have $1, $2 and $3 tables.  As you arrive at the meeting with your donations properly marked, place them on the relevant table.  Don't forget to bring your check book (preferred method of payment) or lots of small bills...
  2. Have spare fabric and looking for an easy sewing project? Why not make a drawstring bag for children aging out of foster care? This bag would be used for his/her belongings instead of a trash bag they currently are given. (see details below)
  3. How many machines do you have? How many machines do you use?  Is that possible that you have some machines that could go to a good home?  The Sewing Machine Project is an organisation that collects and donates sewing machines and tools to the community, see the article in the Quilty Happening section.
On the subject of organisation and plotting for fun time, if you are a Member of the Orlando MQG, check your email box for details about our November Retreat.

Questions, comments, or suggestions regarding the newsletter are welcome, please email me. I would also love to hear of any quilty news or ideas for content you'd like to share.  Constructive feedback is always welcome.

Happy stitching,

Caroline Garnier
Secretary

    HELPING HANDS
    Jan Bilbro

Have spare fabric and looking for an easy sewing project? Why not make a drawstring bag for children aging out of foster care? This bag would be used for his/her belongings instead of a trash bag they currently are given.

There are two ways you can help:

    1. Make a large drawstring bag. Using just basic measurements, no 2 bags are exactly alike. The fabric really doesn't matter! The width can be between 40" and 44" and the length 33" to 36". Smaller pieces can be sewn together, too. A channel can be folded over 1" on the longer side to run the cord through. And voila you have a bag! (So many tutorials online if needed like: diy-drawstring baglarge bag tutorial, or Drawstring bag Video- but these tutorials have different size dimensions!) Bring your bag to monthly meetings or sew days for Jan B. to collect.

    2. Bring any fabric you no longer need to Jan B. and she will make them with your donations. (Fabric can be any size/color and cording or thin rope would be ideal. Leftover bias tape or binding can also be folded then sewn to use, too!)

Thank you for helping to send kids out with a bag of their own!

We are the Orlando MQG! But...we have so many other talents. One that jumps out at me each time I read a member's blog, is cooking!

I need something from each of you for my next icebreaker. Please write down your "Favorite" recipe and send it to me via email, or bring it to the meeting. Please note where you got the recipe (if you can remember). You can also just take a picture of the recipe with your smart phone camera and text it to me. Just be sure to add your name so I know who it's from. (This is my favorite way of gathering recipes. Taking a picture is fast and easy!) (text it to me at 4079021315.)

If you are like me (before I joined this "quilt" guild), and don't cook, please send me a note saying that. Or bring one to the meeting. Thank you so much! I can't wait to see how this turns out!

        COMMUNITY OUTREACH
        Kelly Eskin

The QuiltCon charity quilt theme this year is TEXT!  Kathy Aber is leading the subcommittee working on the quilt.  Black, white and gray are the predominate colors the team will use.  If you would like to be apart of the group working on the quilt, please speak with Kathy.

The Festival of Trees subcommittee is being led by Kate Elliott and Diana Mattoni.  If you would like to be a part of this quilt and group, please speak with one of these ladies.

We are creating quilts for the Zebra Coalition this year.  Our goal is 25 twin-size quilts by next February.  We have geographical teams and a viritual team set up to help us meet this goal.  If you weren't able to sign up and want to - you aren't too late, please let Kelly Eskin know.  We have team leaders in place for most of the groups and work is starting to take place.  We are planning a show and tell for these quilts in October.

        Thanks! Kelly

Orlando MQG - 10 years in the making

With our 10th birthday approaching, I was asked about our first guild meeting. The story of how our guild started is a favorite of mine and one, I am sure, most of you have heard me tell. For this article, though, I went through old documents and emails (yes I still have them) and realized there were some details I had forgotten. So even if you’ve heard (or was part of) the story, read on!
picture of the members of first ever Orlando Modern Quilt Guild meeting

The idea of the Orlando chapter of the Modern Quilt Guild was formed in January 2010. Here is an excerpt of the email I sent to the only sewing friend I knew at the time: “You should receive an invitation to this quilt guild thing.  Really long story….I agreed to start a branch of the Modern Quilt Guild here in Orlando… I hope this will end up being a good idea and not one that I end up saying what was I thinking.”  She agreed to attend the first meeting with me. I also sent an email to a blogging friend that I knew lived in the area saying: “I just wanted to ask you to stop by my blog tomorrow.  I wrote about a new quilt guild in Orlando that I am helping to start….” And her reply: “Very neat! I joined! Hope you were ready for participants!”
Knowing that at least three people would show up and after two months of online discussion and planning with interested quilters, our first meeting was set for Wednesday, March 3, 2010 at The Sewing Studio. I did not know what to expect, but I was equally excited and terrified. You see, this was my first guild meeting ever. Not my first Orlando MQG meeting, but my first quilt guild meeting. I, who chose Accounting as a major in college to avoid public speaking, was responsible for running the meeting.  Spoiler alert: I survived! We had 16 wonderful quilters attend our first meeting which made me very happy. How many do you recognize from the photo?!
To gauge interest, we passed around four different charts asking these questions:
        • What Should this Group Be About
        • What Activities Would You Like To Do
        • What Would You Like To Learn
        • What Can You Contribute - I’m Not Talking About Money
It was interesting to learn about each other while discussing those four questions, and exciting to build a guild from the ground up in the way we wanted. We discussed administrative topics such as dues and officers, planned our first sew day, and confirmed our future meeting schedule.
To conclude, here are a few fun facts:
        • To spread the word, we left flyers at Barnes & Noble, LQS, and JoAnn fabrics
        • 2010-11 officers were Rene' Martinez, President; Hope Sherman, VP; Michele Lancaster, Treasurer; Kathryn Robinson, Secretary
        • Members brought fat quarters for those celebrating birthdays each month
        • My daughter Allyson was a Junior Member - she was 10 at the time
        • Our bylaws could fit on one page
        • The first Treasurer’s report showed an opening balance of $0 and 14.5 paid memberships
Thanks for letting me reminisce. Our guild has definitely grown and changed since that first meeting, but one thing I can say for sure: starting the Orlando Modern Quilt Guild was definitely a good idea! I’ve been known to say that the decision was life changing for me. There’s even a hashtag for that #quiltguildchangedmylife ;-)))

June BOM - Stripey Four at a Time HST Block

This method produces four 6.5" (6" finish) half square triangle squares which can be kept separate or sewn together for a 12.5" block (12" finished).  You will need a 10"white block or white on white, no cream please and several strips of blue and blue/grey fabrics sewn together and cut into a 10" square.

        1. Sew several strips of blue and blue/grey fabrics tougher, enough to cut into a 10" square.

        2. .  Cut two 10" squares, one white, one any shades of blue strips.

        3. Layer the two together, right sides together.

        4. Sew 1/4" around the square (s)

        5. Cut into 4 triangles on the diagonals.

        6. Open into 4 squares.

        7. Keep as four 6.5 (6" finished) squares or join together into 12.5" (12" finished) block.

For each 6.5 inch block brought to the meeting, you will earn a ticket, so if someone brings in a 12.5 inch block they will get 4 tickets.

        Block by Jane Allingham.
