Modern Quilt Books

Have you read any good {Quilting} books lately?!  Here are a few of the latest additions to my quilting library.

Modern Quilt Books
I love the variety of quilting books available!  I collect quilt books like I used to collect cookbooks.  Every time I go to the LQS, book store or log onto Amazon, I discover another quilt book.  Like purchasing fabric wasn't hurting my bank balance enough...ha!

What's your favorite modern quilt book?  Is there a modern quilt book that's on your wish list?

OMQG Board Meeting Minutes

OMQG Board meeting minutes
May 15, 2015

Present:  Yanick, Marge, Rene, Michele, Ede, Beth, and Debra (via Skype)

  • Discussion of placing ads on our blog.  We have received inquiries from some businesses offering us free materials in return for an ad placement on our blog.  After discussion, it was agreed that ads will be only for local shops, and will appear for a limited time.  Sewing Studio could have permanent ad due to the fact that they give us our meeting space without charge.  Ads might appear in the form of an interview with a quilt shop owner, for example, rather than an actual ad.  They could be part of a feature called "Friends of OMQG".  It was agreed that we do not want ads to dominate our blog.
  • Beth proposed  two new challenges: a mini-quilt swap and a UFO swap.  The mini-quilt swap would be voluntary, and take place after the Maitland Library show.  (Members would make a mini-quilt to be shown and then swapped if they wish when the show is over.)  UFO swap will take place in August and announced in June. Members will put a ticket in a jar or envelope for any UFO they are interested in, and winner of each UFO will be drawn from those tickets.
  • Two members have asked for mentors, and have been assigned.
  • Discussion of upcoming teachers:
Carol Lyles Shaw would like to share her Fibonacci techniques at one of our Sew Days.  Board agreed to ask her if she could do this at our August meeting.  Debbe will calculate fees.

It was agreed that we should go ahead and book our teachers through 2016, and even 2017, as their schedules fill so quickly, and demand is so great.

  • It was agreed that we will investigate new locations for a possible retreat this year.   Debra knows of a possible location in Gainesville; will discuss with Debbe.
  • MQG has re-designed some of their website to encourage more interaction from members.  Rene will work on getting more items from our guild on the mothership website to encourage more interaction from our membership.
  • We agreed to re-open the UFO list.  Mentors should encourage new members to add items to the UFO list, and to make name tags.
  • We would like to participate in this year's Maker Faire at the Orlando Science Center.  Volunteers for a committee will be solicited.
  • The Trenton quilt shop has a quilt show each year in Feb-Mar, and would like to feature our guild, alone or with another guild, at a future show.  We will follow up on this with guild membership
  • Debra will post a "Help Wanted" ad on our blog, for a new Block of the Month chair, and volunteers for the Maker Faire and Maitland Library quilt show committees.
  • Our next board meeting will be held Oct 1 at 8:30 am (prior to Sew Day) at Panera's on Sand Lake Road.

Saturday Sew Day

Hello from Saturday Sew Day! We have two Sew Days a month. Come play! Check our calendar for dates and times.

Marge is making a wedding quilt for friends. Beats cookie sheets or crock pots any day!

Our newest member, Bonnie shows Beth her UFO. I bet this beauty gets finished! Welcome, Bonnie! And welcome Leandra. We welcomed two new members this Sew Day! And there were more who came in inquiring. Go OMQG!

Michelle's table is busy with pretty projects. Love her paint tape tips. No wonder she is so prolific. And yeah, she drove from Georgia this morning for Sew Day. See, it's not that far for most of our members and Michelle rolled in from Georgia!

Leandra is making a quilt for the firefighters in her home town.

Mary found the cutest ABC panel and added her touches to make a darling quilt. It was so sweet.

Judy dazzled us with some English Paper Piecing. She fussy cut her fabrics to showcase the cute fabrics.

Yanick and her very good eyes, tackled a Wonder Woman paper pieced project. Oh, tiny pieces! I'm pretty sure Yanick might be the Wonder Woman! Go see the finish on her Instagram feed @sewnwithcurves. It's pretty wonderful!

This fun gift goes to the recipient of the Wonder Woman swap gift. Certainly good for a chuckle.

Beth was making a horse quilt for a dear relative's grandbaby. Look how cute the backing fabric is. The front was even cuter.

Did you get in on the postcard swap? Here are a few that were given or received. This was a fun swap so if you missed it the first time, we may try it again. What do you think?

Our June BOM. Thanks Debra! Jump right in and make one of these. They're easy! You can find the link for instructions on our side bar.

Our founder, Rene' is doing some cute reverse applique work for her little who is celebrating three soon! Rene' learned this technique at QuiltCon and obviously paid attention in class.

Ellen mastered curved piecing for this gigantic quilt. It just takes 90 or so blocks. It was surreal watching her sash her big blocks together and add borders in a few hours.

Sorry, I forgot to take pictures of the food. It's always excellent. Everyone brings delicious stuff and we eat, chat, and laugh all day. Our next Sew Day at Dr. Phillips is Saturday, June 20th. Mark your calendars! Hope to see you there!

Oxygen tank covers are another great project.

Our guild will again be participating in the charity quilt challenge for Quiltcon 2016.  The theme is "Improv-ing with Intent." More information will be coming at future meetings.

There will also be another Michael Miller Fabric Challenge at the next Quiltcon.  A fabric challenge registration link will be sent to all MQG members Sat May 9 at 10 am, so if you wish to participate, make sure you're at your computer at that time, as the fabric bundles will go really fast! A sew day for the Days For Girls project will take place at Wandering Stitches on May 18 from 10-3.
