January BOM

This month we will start with a little color theory: Are you more of a “WARM” color person, or are you, (like me), more into “COOL” colors?
Warm colors are Red/Orange/Yellow, while Cool colors include Green/Blue/Purple. More information can be found at: http://www.tigercolor.com/color-lab/color-theory/color-theory-intro.htm#warm_cool_colors and http://blog.design-seeds.com/ and of course many others.

We will use a block from the MQG Quilt of the Month for Nov. 2015. Quilt, (Jeweled), designed by Jessica Godfrey and given to the MQG members. This pattern can be found here: https://community.themodernquiltguild.com/sites/default/files/JeweledQuilt.pdf .

For our BOM, half of her diamond block will be considered one block. One block for the OMQG BOM will be 8” by 11.5”.

For our BOM, you will choose a color that represents you. (Choose one warm or one cool color). That color will be used for template A in the block. (Center triangle).
Then choose one or two monochromatic or analogous fabrics for template B. (You could choose one fabric to use with both B templates), or two fabrics (one for each template B). I chose Blue for my template A. Then I chose a lighter blue and a darker blue for the B templates. (But I could have used the light blue for both B templates).

Use White for Template C, (background).

Jessica only gives instructions for piecing this pattern. If you choose to piece it, you will be working with fabric edges cut on the bias. Be very careful with these bias edges. They are easily stretched and can be difficult to keep the seams straight and crisp. Do NOT pull or push the fabrics when piecing!
I chose to paper piece the blocks so I didn’t have to worry about the bias edges as much. (I will provide a PP template for those who wish to PP the block.) (Have you guessed that I like paper piecing?)

As always, if you PP the block, do not remove the paper before turning it in.

MEETING MINUTES
Maitland, FL
Dec 2, 2015

President Yanick called the meeting to order.  38 members and 3 guests were present.

Karen Farr, a Juki representative, demonstrated one of the new Juki long arm machines available at the Sewing Studio.

 TREASURER'S REPORT
Marge noted that November's raffle basket total was a new record--$36!  She has also prepared a line-item budget for 2016 that will shortly be submitted to the members for their approval.

RAFFLE BASKET
.......was won by Alissa.

 ONGOING UFO CHALLENGE
Kelly reported that the deadline is almost here!  You must notify her of any completed quilts from your UFO list by no later than Dec 10 to be eligible for this year's prize.  Winner will be announced at our holiday party.

HOLIDAY PARTY
Our annual party will take place on Sew Day at the Dr Phillips Library on Dec 19.  If you'd like to participate in the gift exchange, bring a homemade gift that will fit in a brown paper lunch bag.  We will also be having an Ugly Sweater Contest so break out your most hideous finery.  And as always, bring a dish for the potluck, and as many sewing projects as you'd like to work on.

RETREAT
Our retreat last month was an overwhelming success--so much so that we have already booked the Kenilworth Lodge again for next year for Nov 3-6.  If you would like to attend, and would like to set up a payment plan for the cost, please contact Marge.

CHARITY PROJECTS
Sharleen was thrilled and moved to announce that we have collected 238 pillows for National Guard soldiers so far!  More pillowcases will be completed at this month's Maitland Sew Day.  Kits for pillowcases can be purchased from Wandering Stitches ($7 for two); you can make them yourself, or just make a financial donation to the cause, and Kate will sew them together.

Sharleen also stated that in 2016, the guild will work on 3 or 4 time-limited charity projects, with possibly one year-long project as well.

A request was received from a local motorcycle club for a donation from our guild of a small, preferably motorcyle-themed quilt to be auctioned to help St. Jude's research.  If you have something  you would like to donate, please contact Yanick ASAP.  (Note:  Alejandrina and Mary Sm both came forward after the meeting and volunteered quilts to donate.)

UPCOMING EVENTS
  •  A survey will soon be distributed to all OMQG members, asking questions about a wide range of topics pertaining to the guild.  PLEASE take the time to fill it out and return.  The guild is growing by leaps and bounds, and this will provide the board with valuable feedback.
  • QuiltFest will take place in Orlando Jan 7-9, 2016.  Discounted tickets are available at the Sewing Studio.  OMQG has been asked to provide a small, non-juried exhibit of our quilts.  If you'd like to participate, please email a photo of the quilt(s) you'd like to have included to Yanick ASAP.
  • The OMQG is about to have its very own library, started with a very generous donation of books from Lucky Spool!  Yanick will serve as our librarian.  Starting in January, members will be able to check out books for one month.  If there are books that you would like to see the guild purchase, please note that in our upcoming survey.  If you do check out a Lucky Spool book, they have asked that you post a review of it on Amazon.
  • Debbie Z and Jackie presented an optional Christmas applique quilt project that will take place starting in January at Maitland Sew Days.  Please contact Debbie Z for more information if you'd like to participate.  (Note:  copyright issues will be addressed and resolved prior to the start of this project.)
  • The fabric auction is returning, so start sorting through your stash for fabrics you've fallen out of love with.  Consensus from the guild was that the auction should take place in March or April.  Marge will start collecting donated fabric in January.
UFO CHALLENGE
Members who took one of the UFO's brought in at our October meeting were asked to show the completed project in which they used the UFO.

 SHOW AND TELL

When your heart hurts so much

When you see a friend in pain, it hurts.  It hurts so badly and you just wish you could carry the load for them, or at least a portion in hopes that their burden is more manageable.

Two months ago one of our guild sisters, Leandra (The Zombie Quilter), tragically lost her 20 year old daughter to a motorcycle accident in the wee hours of September 19.  Our hearts ached for her and we wanted to do what we all do best;  make her a quilt.  Time was of the essence and our guild is quite large so we needed a quick and easy block that was on the small side so all of them would fit.  It also needed to be scrappy so that virtually everyone could participate without having to run to the store.  We noticed that Leandra had a Pinterest board called “For the Love of Purple” and we found a simple and smallish heart block here by Cluck Cluck Sew.  So our plan was to create quilt of purple hearts!  Our board members approved the plan and information was sent out within 24 hours.  Our goal was to have the quilt completed and to give it to her at our next meeting on October 7.  I knew our guild members would not disappoint!  We could do this!

Why did I know we could do this?  First of all, our guild members, and quilters in general, are such loving and caring people.  And we love to comfort people with our quilts!  I also knew we could do this because in October of 2012 Judy lost her life partner and we made her a beautiful quilt in just a few weeks and without her knowing it.  We even swapped blocks right under her nose at one of our sew days!

The day after the email went out the blocks started arriving.  Every day blocks were being dropped off or coming in the mail, many with sweet notes of sympathy.  As the collector of the blocks, I have to say that the sentiment of each and every block was so loving.  I could just feel the love that was going to envelop Leandra and her family when she would be presented with the quilt.  It was such an honor to be the one to collect the blocks!

All in all, we received 48 blocks, one short of a 7x7 grid, but that was no obstacle as we felt that an empty block was symbolic of the loss of Caitlyn.  Beth embroidered her name and three butterflies in the space so that it wasn’t entirely empty, just as we are sure that while there is a huge hole in Leandra’s heart we also know that it is filled with so much love at the same time.

I want to take a moment to publicly thank Leandra and the opportunity to work on this quilt.  Caitlyn’s death touched me deeply and it has helped to create a friendship with Leandra that I cherish.  Nothing will ever make up for Caitlyn’s loss but I know that many beautiful things have resulted from it.

Caitlyn, may you spread your wings and fly with nothing holding you back!

December Block of Month

Improv Christmas Trees

This month's BOM is an improv Christmas tree block! I saw a blog post by Wombat Quilt's that inspired me. Her guild made improv tree blocks for a donation quilt, and I decided that would be perfect for us for a Christmas quilt!

Her blog post link:

Once you read that post, just kind of use it as your inspiration and do your own thing! The only "rules" to this month's BOM are as follows:

Colors:  Green, triangle tree. Can be solid or prints, its up to you, just needs to be green and a triangle. Can be one whole piece as the triangle, but I think improv pieced triangles would look best, it's up to you.  White/cream/low volume background. Any and/or all for the background pieces, all one or mix it up, it's up to you. Brown, solid or pieced for the trunk piece, it's up to you.

Size: 7"-12", it's up to you. Does NOT need to be square, can also be a rectangle, it's up to you. Also, the tree can be large or small, but please leave at least a 1/4" from the top of the tree to the top of the block so we can attach the blocks together :)

Below are two photos, one of My improv piecing right after I cut it into a triangle, and one of the block finished. Let's get to tree making!! I want to see short trees and tall trees and skinny trees and fat trees!! Its up to you! (See a theme??!!) Merry Christmas y'all :)

 Happy Sewing!
