Razzleberry Sew Day

Our Sew Day featured a class taught by Julie of LaTodera. Julie debuted her newest pattern, the Razzleberry Pincushion. Julie sewed along with us making samples for Quilt Market. While her patterns are easy to follow, it was fun to have Julie walk us through the steps in person.

Everyone had gorgeous fabric choices to make their pincushions.
 Pouf production.
More poufs.
Pouf city. There may have been pouf-themed songs.

Love the huge meeting room at the Dr. Phillips library.

The food is always good at Sew Day.

Julie also designs fabrics. She brought her fabulous fabrics along, so we were able to shop too. Linda brought a big bag of fabric her neighbor donated. We all had fun picking out fabric to take home.

Ta da! Finished Razzleberries. Our next Sew Day will be Friday, October 18 at the Dr. Phillip Library.

October 2013 Block of the Month

The October block of the month is quilter's choice with a Halloween theme. Anything goes! You could use Halloween novelty prints, combine solids in Halloween colors, applique a jack-o-lantern or bat, paper piece candy corn, create a spider web block, etc. Here are some images to get you thinking.

The block should measure 12.5" x 12.5". Make one block or many blocks. Bring your block(s) to the October 2nd meeting for a chance to win them all.

Some of the fun blocks from last October.

Candy Apples(from Martha Stewart)

Unsalted butter, for parchment paper
2 cups sugar
3/4 cup water
1/2 cup light corn syrup
1/2 teaspoon red food coloring
6 medium apples

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper; butter parchment, and set aside. In a medium heavy-bottomed saucepan, combine sugar, 3/4 cup water, corn syrup, and food coloring, if using. Bring to a boil over high heat; reduce heat to medium-high. Insert candy thermometer and continue to boil until temperature reaches between 300 degrees and 310 degrees (hard crack stage), about 20 minutes.

Meanwhile, insert a wooden stick into the top of each apple, pushing about halfway through; set aside. When mixture reaches temperature, immediately remove from heat. Working quickly, dip apples in sugar mixture until completely coated. Transfer to prepared baking sheet; allow to cool.

V.     Challenges

Yanick presented two challenges to guild members.  Will you accept the challenges?

The first is to make a name tag (in any size that is easily readable) to wear to meetings. We will share them at the October meeting and hope to see them being worn in future meetings. Need an idea for making a nametag? The OMQG President's Pinterest page has a Board of pinned name tags.

The second challenge is inspired by the Double Wedding Ring challenge being conducted by the NYC Mod Quilt Group. The information about the NYC Mod challenge is at their website, and it provides specifics on the three types of quilts (small one ring, traditional, or modern) that can be entered in the challenge.  OMQG members who choose to participate are to bring their completed projects to the December guild meeting.  Members may also wish (this is completely optional) to enter their quilts in the NYC Mod Quilt Group Challenge by uploading a photo of their quilt by December 1st.

Jacquie Gering Workshop - Day Two

Jacquie Gering taught us her Stitch and Flip technique during Saturday's workshop.  We had a packed class of eager students.

Genius
Fireball by Jacquie Gering
Who knew there was so much you could do with blocks made with this method?!  Jacquie demonstrated stitch and flip, discussed the various types of blocks that are a result of the stitch and flip technique, showed examples of the various blocks, explained how they created movement depending on placement, and best of all, encouraged us to examine in detail her quilts.

In addition to quilts from her Quilting Modern book, Jacquie brought a few new ones like this mini quilt made with rectangular blocks.  Love the "low volume" background fabrics against the brights.

Brilliant
Jacquie Gering - Swirling Stars (think that's the title)
As with Friday's class, members went to work creating their own designs.  Below is a sampling of the process and progress made:
