Issue 30

April 28, 2018

Dear Guildies,

We have another exciting month to kick off with the start of our new Sewcials and Bees. Check your email for more info on the groups you signed up for and enjoy getting to know each other better!

Reservations for the Orlando MQG Retreat have opened. You should have received an email with those details, however there was an error about the dates/days. To clarify: this year's Retreat is November 9th - 12th and the quilting room will be available from noon Friday 11/9 to noon Monday 11/12. Find your roommate and get your room booked!

This month's meeting will mostly feature the Fabric Auction but members will be available at info stations to help with any social media questions you might have. So, bring your cash or check and your tech-y questions about Facebook or Instagram! We will also have a guest speaker from Samaritan Village to tell us about their mission. This is sure to be a full meeting so we will postpone Show n' Tell until the June meeting.

If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions regarding the newsletter, please email me. I would also love to hear of any quilty news or ideas for content you'd like to share. Constructive feedback is always welcome.

Happy stitching,

Ashley Gottshalk
Secretary

Programming
Paula Kennedy

Wow...can you believe all of the exciting happenings with monthly programming !? The tentative schedule for our whole year will soon be posted on the blog, and the bees, hives, collaborations and skill building is on its way via SignUpGenius (you can still sign up for some activities!)

We are off to a roaring start and should soon see some creative reveals, especially if you check in on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, or the blog...take your pick!

Thanks to Ashley Pollard  Gottshalk for our beautiful BOM - whoever wins is going to love all those gorgeous blocks .

May meeting brings the fabric auction (bring your pre-priced books to sell and your cash or checkbook, because you can never have too much fabric) and mini workshops on social media. Caroline Garner gave a great presentation on all of our social media options at April’s meeting, and the mini workshops dig a little deeper, so bring all of your questions and you can find answers!

See you soon !

The Modern Quilt Guild released this year's QuiltCon 2019 Charity Quilt Challenge color palette and theme. What a great way to show off your creativity! Please contact Kathy Aber or Marge Cree if you are interested in participating in the design, piecing, or quilting the quilt.

From the QuiltCon site: The 2019 design theme is small piecing. You have probably noticed some modern quilters using small piecing in recent years. While it can be hard to define, let’s say that small piecing would incorporate fabric pieces that are smaller than 1” in either width or length. So you might picture long, skinny strips, or little tiny squares, for example. The small piecing can be improvisationally pieced, traditionally pieced or foundation pieced. It’s up to you. Remember, the quilt doesn’t need to be exclusively small piecing. Small piecing must be an integral part of the design but you can incorporate other modern design elements, such as negative space, to make the challenge more approachable. We have put together a gallery of images of quilts that incorporate small piecing to help inspire and guide you.
The color palette is shown here. No, you don’t need to use all the colors in this palette—your team can be selective if you prefer and limit your palette to just a few of the colors shown.
Also, you do not need to use the specific fabrics listed by the manufacturers below, but seeking out some of these solids might help you pin down the color palette.
Once you have some of these solids on hand, it is easy to pull prints from your team’s stash that coordinate. And YES, you can certainly use modern prints too! When choosing prints, it is best to look for prints that are monochromatic or even tone-on-tone prints rather than those that include other colors since those colors may not be part of this color palette.

Call for Blocks

Bring your blocks for #quiltsforbroncos to the May meeting. This quilt drive benefits those impacted in Humboldt and Tisdale, Saskatchewan with the loss of 15 members of the Humboldt Broncos team and organization. Specific details about their request can be found here.

Quilts for Samaritan Village

Check your email for a quick survey to let us know who will be interested in being part of the teams to make our quilts for the Community Outreach project, Quilts for the Samaritan Village. We would like to form groups for each quilt. The Community Outreach team will assign colors for each group and your group will come up with a design for a twin sized quilt. Please answer the questions and we will have the information collated by the May meeting.

Wow, the programming rollout last meeting was inspiring, wasn’t it? Interested in getting involved in some of the Bees but aren’t sure where to start? Unsure of what all the meeting activities are about?  A guild mentor is a great resource to use. What is a guild mentor? It’s a member who has participated in various guild activities and can guide others along the way. Want a mentor?  Want to be a mentor?

Cre-active Club Challenge

#creactiveclub and #2018creactiveclub
Caroline Garnier

We are wrapping up our first Creactive Club, however due to the Fabric Auction, we will have our Show’n’Tell at the June meeting.

Now I am sure that you have created new UFOs, if you want an incentive to finish them, why not join our #2018creactiveclub?  Pick out 6 unfinished projects (or less) that you would love to finish, write your list (pdf here) and send it to Caroline (carolinejanny@hotmail.com). You can also hand it in at the meeting. During our May meeting we will pick our first project to work on.

Instagram and Facebook Workshops
We will run some mini workshops on Instagram and Facebook during the Fabric Auction. There will be 2 stations, one for Instagram, one for Facebook. At each station, we will have 2 Guildies showing you the basic ropes of social networking. Don’t shy away, go and ask questions, and decide whether you might like it or not.

July Meeting Date Change
Please update your calendars: the July meeting previously scheduled for July 4th has been changed to Friday, July 9th, same time and place. This change is due to The Sewing Studio's Annual Sale on July 4th.
