Charity Project

I contacted the "Health Care Center of Windemere" to get information about the residents.  They have about 120 residents at any one time. When we broke them into different categories, they have many "rehab", and other residents that have family and friends in the area, and really are not alone.
There are about 25 females, and 5 male residents who are "long term", and have little or no family and friends in the area.  At the Aug. meeting we decided to focus on these individuals for our Christmas project.
I will provide a stocking for each resident, and I'm working on crochet capelets. I'm also making some lap quilts, and I will make pillow cases. I will post some links to items that may be fun to make.  If you know you are going to make something for this community, please post here.  If you know something you would like to make, but need help finding a pattern or whatever, please let me know.
I am posting some links to items members had mentioned possibly making.
Let's see if we can't make this a wonderful Christmas for these elderly residents! (And have fun doing it)!

Recap of Field Trip

Yesterday's field trip to the Quilt Shop of Deland was a blast!!!   Thank you Hope for organizing this group activity, and Michele for taking pictures.  Rebecca, Kathryn, Hope, Rene', Michele, Beth and Julie were in attendance (posing below with quilt shop owner Judy).

Judy Hansen and her staff were very accommodating of our group.  Dawn demonstrated all the cool things you can do with yo yo makers.  Judy demonstrated the Supreme Slider and Quilt Halo while giving tips on quilting in general and with metallic thread.  It was an exciting day also in that we got a sneak peek at Judy's new fabric line still in production....it's a beauty; Judy had also just found out that she will be featured in Fabric Trends for Quilters magazine...very cool!; and there was a videographer on hand to record our every move....coincidental? ;-)

Every one in our group left with a fat quarter and pattern of our choosing from Judy's Bella Flora line, a bag of oversized charm squares, and fabric and instructions to make fabric flowers.  Of course, all of us took advantage of the sales going on in the store, and I think each of us left with a shopping bag full of goodies.  After an exhausting few hours of shopping and learning, we enjoyed lunch together at The Main Street Grill.  Our group sure knows how to have fun!!!

Our next guild meeting is Wednesday, September 1 at The Sewing Studio in Maitland from 10am to 12pm.  See you there!

August Minutes

August 4, 2010
10 AM - 12 Noon
Sewing Studio in Maitland, Fl.

There were 8 members and 1 guest present. The meeting was conducted by Rene.

Welcome to members and guests.

August Birthdays-Kathryn was present.  Others with August  birthdays, Laura, Robin, Leah and Jaime, were not present.

A Book Exchange was held.  The exchange is intended for you to get to swap a quilting book you are no longer interested in with someone else's book.

Beth gave an update on the Charity Project.  We agreed that we would focus on items for the long term residents of the facility who have limited resources and no family.  This is about 25 women and 5 men. The type of items that we will work on include scarves, hats, socks, crocheted and quilted ornaments, pillow cases, eye glass holders and walker totes.

Kathryn gave an overview of the July Meeting Minutes which have been posted online for the previous month.

Michelle gave the Treasurer's Report.  We have $736.25 in the checking account, and we currently have 20 paid members.

In August in place of the Sew Day we will have a field trip.  Interested members will meet on August 26th (Thursday) at 10 am at the Quilt Shop of Deland.  The visit will be followed by members meeting for lunch. (Each person pays for her own lunch.)  Please let Hope know if you plan to attend the trip so she can make lunch reservations in advance.

Magrit will do a demo at the regular September 1st meeting.  Sew Day in September is scheduled for September 18th.

The October Sew Day is being replaced with a workshop by Juanita Yeager on machine quilting.  This will be on October 2nd at the South West (Dr. Phillips) branch of the Orange County Library System. The Guild will help cover the cost of the workshop for members with members paying $35.00 and non-members paying $55.00. We need to have a minimum of 10 attendees.  Please let Hope know asap if you are planning to attend.

The regular October Meeting will be held on October 6th at the Sewing Studio in Maitland.

Ugly Fabric Challenge-A number of members brought an "ugly" fabric from their stashes in plain paper bags. Participants exchanged bags (without peeking at the fabric) and have agreed to make anything they wish with the uglies and bring the results to the regular October 6th Meeting.

The Door Prize was won by Michelle.

The Demo on watercolor/soy milk fabric painting was presented by Kathryn. There was also a lengthy discussion on printing digital images on fabric.

The meeting ended with a Show and Tell session.
